vintage Becker Avus radio
« on: May 23, 2017, 20:51:58 »
Recently I came across a vintage Becker Avus radio. It looks like Europa or Mexico, but I couldn't find any reference of it as equipment offered by Mercedes?

Do you know which cars were equipped with this type and what specific features distinguish Avus from Europa or Mexico?

The name is very vintage like, and in fact it always was (it means Grandpa in Latin :D)

Here is a pic of this radio. It is shown with a traffic decoder, which I believe was used at the time in Germany

Most interesting. Also the translation of the name, Avus. It was the name of a rather interesting Grand Prix track, two long straights connected by high bank U-turns.

Jonny,
many thanks for pointing me out to the right direction as far as the name is concerned. Now it makes much more sense :)
I read the Wiki and other sources with great interest. As I plan to be in Berlin for their next Moto show in September, I hope to find a moment to have a look at the vestiges of the track. The control tower that became a motel is also tempting.

Meantime, I am still interested to now whether Avus radios were proposed for Pagodas.
The very authoritative site of Koenigs Radios shows this model as one suitable for Pagodas and more generally for other Mercedes models. More here: https://www.koenigs-klassik-radios.de/en/car-radios/mercedes-benz/becker-avus-pin-stripe-design-for-mercedes-benz/a-10101/
But the question remains whether Avus radios were really a proposed option for Pagodas?
