How far are you planning on going?  "Rebuilding " the axle is really the sum of several jobs performed at one time.  Replacing seals, wheel bearings, pinion bearings etc.  Most of them have been handled here at one time or another.

if your axle isn't making noise I would suggest changing the wheel bearings and seals,  the pinion seal and the axle boot (1 piece)  those jobs are fairly straightforward.  If you Google search "Mercedes Swing axle wheel bearing" I am sure there is info out there.  Unfortunately most of the rear axle information is in the earlier BBB.  The BBB's are structured so each new issue supplements the one before it.  Since the axle dates back to the late 50's you need the earlier BBB.  I have the 1959 BB which covers the wheel bearing and pinion seal as long as the split boot repair (I would suggest using the one piece boot).

If you want to go further I will be HOPEFULLY rebuilding my eBay find 3.27 axle in the next couple weeks.  I was thinking of doing a write up of the center section bearing change.   It isn't super difficult but having proper tools helps a bunch.
