Original Exhaust Front Pipes NLA
« on: December 15, 2016, 15:56:55 »
It seems that the original front exhaust pipes (later style for most of the W113's) are NLA!

Yes I noticed they started disappearing from the usual places early this year. I should have bought when I had the chance.  :-\

My first thought is, why? There are still a lot of cars around that would use this system.  I guess there's always after market.

Some of the vendors have been buying up the remaining stock of all parts and selling at ridicules mark ups.  The trunk mat was $160 and I see one vendor at $1289.99...

Joe's right- both Niemoller and SLS are showing low stocks of the exhaust, many other European dealers are showing no stock of the front pipes at all.

In that instance it makes sense to install a stainless steel exhaust and be done with it and never have to worry about it again. Unless of course originality's an issue....

My stainless steel exhaust will probably outlive me..... ::)

Best,

Mercedes are smart.
They will keep data from parts requests and when the demand is identified they will be available again.
Lots of stuff has been "NLA" only then to re-appear as available years later.

Yes, but when it is available again it will be at a much higher price. There's a wrongly understood belief that parts are made on a continuous basis, and that would be true only for production parts in a production car. In the world of spares, it's by batch. One batch may last for years, and when it comes time to re-order, everything is more costly: the raw materials, the labor, the tooling repair, etc. That's why you often see "matching parts" such as L and R parts, with wildly differing prices...

During the time of unavailable from the manufacturer is time when the aftermarket folks get involved...

Badali,

The $200.00 mat from Babak is an aftermarket part and will be fine if that is what you want. $1289.00 is crazy money but appears to the the real deal.

So, what I said a few years ago is now taking shape; the price of basic parts with prices so high no one can afford them. If the cost of materials, remaking a new batch, and all of the other factors are so compelling, why is it after market sellers can often run much smaller orders at considerably lower retail prices? Understanding that these parts may not be the same quality, it kind of flies in the face of MB telling us that one of their parts should be 400% more than last year.

I have recently come across a Polish exhaust shop (they re-built exhaust for my 300GE some time ago with, surprisingly, all parts fitting nicely together and fitting all the mounting points) who said they were ordering front exhaust pipes form IMASAF. And IMASAF had the W113 pipes in their catalolgue. I asked for a front pipe for my car - I will see what and if I get anything. The price was around $250.

Just a note for others, The IMASF pipes are a horrible fit. I had to grind the welds off the crossover and reposition the pipes. The bends are also way off.
I am hesitant to put these in my car.
Anyone know if/when MB will have them back in stock?

I have it on good authority that they will come back once Dieter Zetsche starts his turn as Chairman of Daimler's  supervisory board in 2021, that is, if there are any left over from building his throne in the board room.  ;D 🤣 🤣

Got a confirmation today from the Classic Center that the front downpipes 1134900920 are currently in production. No ETA on availability but they confirmed in fact that they are being produced.

Two months ago I got info they were being in tests. I have it ordered 2 years ago. Never got NLA answer - they kept the order. I am following up with the dealer every now and then...

Teahead, The aftermarket pipes are junk. They either don't fit correctly or are manufactured incorrectly. Went through 4 sets from 3 manufacturers. All with problems ranging from strange noise to rattles to pinholes in the welded seams. Im at that point where I would rather wait and cough up the dough and fix it right once and for all. Cant speak of the stainless but they lack the crossover section. Which does make a difference.

The pipes on my all-stainless system do have the crossover piece. Honestly I'd never go back to mild steel now that I have the stainless. It still looks and performs exactly the same as when I installed it new in 2003 or 2004. Great sound too.

At the point I bought my system from Time Valve, they did not have the crossover. Yes, I am curious who might have that as well.

I bought my complete exhaust system at Van Dijk in The Netherlands. I assume they source most of what they sell from Germany so you could try the various German suppliers or give Van Dijk a call. Mind you this is a while ago I bought my exhaust from them so things could be different now.

So Tom Hansen was at Pagodafest and I put the heat on him. He explained how the parts computer system worked and that the downpipes are listed under a specific code meaning they are in production. He thinks they are a few months out.

The PN number you quoted is not front exhaust part, it is the central piece that was there before.

The development is about the LHD front exhaust pipe - this is the one is missing, I ordered 2 years ago and its development is about to finish soon, hopefully, but is not yet finished.

The PN will change, but it is not the one you quoted.

So we keep waiting for the front pipe.
