Tail light replacement

First post here so thank you for the membership.

Brief history:

My dad bought his 250SL about 10 years ago, from a doctor getting divorced, for 13,000 dollars. It's a manual 4 speed and a German import.  Has the hardtop which weighs a ton.

He unfortunately broke the right tail light and I wanted to do something nice and find a replacement.  Does the entire unit have to be replaced or can just the lense come off?

Pic attached.

You have a few options if you want to retain the "all red" lens. You can replace the entire tail lamp which includes the chrome surround with a reproduction piece or you can replace just the lens with a glue in type or a snap in type. The glue in type has the original markings as the factory one did. It can be a little tricky though. It looks like your chrome surround is bent or distorted so replacing just the lens you may have fitment issues. Here are a few links.
