Tyre size for 1964 Uk 230SL

Hi can anyone tell me what is the original tyre size and make for my 230sl 1964?? And also in uk where I can buy these tyres from?? Just doing a complete nut and bolt restoration so would like everything to be original spec. Many thanks

185/80 R14 90H (formerly 185 HR14)
This is the original tire configuration for all 113's, nothing else.

People here use whatever on their cars - depending on personal taste and what can be licensed in your specific country (MOT).

Many people like the 195/75 R14, especially in the States since those tyres are cheap.

My car's data card has the brand of the OE tire in field "19". It was "Phönix". Phönix became part of Continental tire in 2007.
Back in the 60s and 70s, Daimler Benz was an outspoken supporter of the local German supplier industry. That's why the tiny company "Beru" had most of the OE spark plug applications.

I coincidentally took a few pictures today of the spare tire in my early '68 280 SL.
After 50 years the Tire is still in pretty  decent condition. Had the original Phoenix  tube replaced two years ago.

185 14s are not the most common tyre size

Most “correct” in the uk is considered to be the Michelin MXVs, with a rubbing strip on the sidewall. Take a deep breath when pricing them up
Stick put some Blockley tyres on mine last he had it and I am pretty happy with them and they were less than half the cost

Hi Ralph,

I missed your pictures when browsing the referenced post.
That tire shown still looks amazing. I see the red markings still on the surface, were they are only remaing in the thread groove on my sparetire, which obviously has been briefly used on the road. Still fun to have it intact, the nice rounded p-edge is not like anything currently available.

When I went for a new set of tires last year I had two objectives:  Duplicate as close as possible the narrow white wall look provided by the Firestone Phoenix tires delivered on the car and, duplicate as close as possible the diameter/circumference of the original tires.  I considered the curb rub strip as on the Cokers nice but not necessary.  I went for the Maxxis 195/75 R14 as they were closest to meeting my objectives.  The post below includes measurements taken at the time comparing the new tires to the original Firestone Phoenix.

As Achim indicates they are pretty cheap in the USA.

Coming back to the original question, I would recommend the Vredesteins in original size from, for instance Camskill.co.uk for about £120 each. It's a very good tyre, specially made for classic cars. The Vredesteins have a rubber lip on one side and w/o on the other side, so you can decide before mounting on the rim.
