W108 Series 280 SE 4.5 compatible parts
« on: November 28, 2014, 08:39:38 »
There is a  280SE 4.5 108 series car available in the local junkyard. Are there any switchable parts with the 113 series and the 112 series  from the 108?

I didn't know you had local junkyards where you live.
If the rear seat has side reading lights for the passengers, get those just because they are cool.  The parts that are going to be common would include some switches, fuel sender, _maybe_ the fuel pump but not sure on that one, steering wheel if it is early enough, rubber trunk mat is same as W111 so probably same as W112, headlights _might_ be compatible with W111/W112, door contact switches, interior door handle for late 113 (the chrome opening handle), ...  Other nice things to have would be front headrests with mounting rails, rear headrests with mounting, euro-style licence plate light, ... that's what I can think of off hand.  If it were a 280 SE/SEL 6 cylinder there would be more engine and injection parts that are the same or similar, but the V8 has entirely different fuel injection...   Some people on ebay say the bumpers are the same but I think that they are not. (the same as W111 / W112).   Window cranks (if it doesn't have power windows) are the same as late pagoda.  I'm sure I'm missing a lot of stuff from the compatibility list...

People like the gear ratio of the 4.5 cars and often put those in Pagodas....   Steel wheels are compatible with Pagodas and will fit W112.  If you have pics of the car it would be amusing...

If I were pick parts for my own purpose, I would take a good look at the following:
1.  Headlight bezels - if no dents that's good.  If the clear plastic triangles are not chipped around the edges, really good.
2.  Side marker lights - I never get these but some people do.  Same as late Pagoda.
3.  Exterior rear view mirror - if really good get it.
4.  wheels with hubcaps and beauty rings - from the picture it looks like the car has steel wheels with dog dish and beauty ring.  Get either the wheels with hubcaps and beauty rings or at least the hubcaps and beauty ring.  Same as earlier Pagoda (not very early 230 SL)  They should be 6 x 14.
5.  Hood ornament - there is a clip that slides to one side on the underneith. If it is good get it.
6.  Cloisenne (enamel) badge on grill - if undamaged (and all the white enamel is still there) get it.  Small (6mm?) nut on the back, you need a socket or nut driver.
7.  Steering wheel - I think it's the same as a late pagoda but not 100% sure.  If no cracks, get it and the horn pad.  Horn pad pulls off to reveal small bolts (6 or 7?) remove those to get to hub nut which is 22 mm or 21 mm (can't remember which)
8.  Look in trunk.  On very tail panel of trunk between the back of the tail lights and the center there is a notch that might have a rubber holder with a chrome tool that is threaded on one end and flathead screw on the other end, about 4 inches long.  That's the wheel positioning tool for changing tires.  If it is there get it.  Same tool as a Pagoda and all other mercedes with steel wheels and often still there because people don't see it.
9.  It kind of looks like the car might have lap belts with chrome buckles.

Looks like a U.S. car.  Is this in Dubai?

Hi Scott

Yes the car is in Dubai. There are also some window parts which my friend in Dubai who has an early 300D (Adenauer) and a 1965 SE convertible (112 series) could use. I am trying to check out if the speedo tacho and clock are the same size as the 113.

no. There is no tach in that car but if it were a 3.5 there would be a teach which you would want even though it isn't compatible. If it does have a tach then it will also have a rectangular click which is fintail compatible.  Speedo is different also.

Also, some of the heater control parts (not the control knobs) are the same. Lots of good electrical relays. The main EFI computer "brain box" is a good item for non W113 owners.  These also work in early W107 SLs  (350SL, 450SL) also. They are extremely expensive to replace. The ignition distributor with trigger points and the throttle opening switch are also in demand. The clock fits the W113 dash but has no internal light and the face is slightly different. It does not have the correct plug connection also.  However these clocks are in demand for others since they have a quartz movement and are more durable and accurate than the versions used in earlier W108 and W109 sedans. Front brake calipers and ventilated rotors are a popular upgrade for some performance minded W113 owners. The trunk mat will fit but is not exactly the same. The cut out for the fuel filler is in a  different place. I believe the stem on the rear view mirror is longer, but the head is the same. Same with the exterior mirrors. The  base is different but the head is the same.

Lastly don't forget to get the two special blue plastic nuts (they are used to hold the dash wood in place on the W113 cars). They are not used on the dash wood of that sedan.  Who knows where to find them?

Check the sway bar - should be large dia. than 113 - - my understating it is a good upgrade. Will need slight modification.

The yard owner wants to sell the complete car as it starts. He will probably sell it for about $2500 but not worth buying as too much effort. Waiting for him to sell me the parts which I want and can be easily removed and stored.
