Gas cap not locking
« on: March 22, 2023, 13:18:13 »
My gas cap does not lock although the the key is normally turned from right to left.
The issue is that it keeps coming off easily

Not sure if i am not able to lock it correctly or there is an issue

When you lock the cap, what is supposed to happen is that the chrome top spins freely and does not engage the rest of the mechanism. I would try to figure out why this is not working on your cap. Maybe with some penetrant into the lock cylinder, and the rest of the cap, to try and get the locking mechanism back 'in action'. If that fails, try taking it to a locksmith to see if they can fix this. New caps are pricey these days I believe.

What i actually do is move it clockwise and with the “tick” sound i lock it but when i remove anti-clock wise it gets losen up and removed.

Yes new ones are expensive i was searching ebay and some websites.

Move "it"?  Move (rotate) the whole cap clockwise, or rotate just the key in the cap?

From memory I think you have to hold the cap as you turn the key, so that it locks (if it's working). One of those many things better explained/looked at visually!

I rotate the whole cap clockwise and then lock it with the key.

My cap is fine once it is locked, but it's owner (me) is still trying to learn the best way to lock it. Not a good look for the "cool guy with the cool car." Ha.

I had similar issues and found if I push the cap in then rotate and lock it it works fine. you may have to so that for a while to free up what ever blocks it due to old age :)

I had a similar problem a while back due to excess friction between cap and fill pipe, solved with a Tyvek washer added into the cap.
