1969 280 SL - Two Courtesy Lights
« on: March 31, 2016, 13:58:12 »
My 1969 2780 SL has two courtesy lights. One under the ignition switch and one under the far right vents on the dashboard.  I can't find reference anywhere that SLs came with two (2) courtesy lights.  They all seem to reference one light.  Can anyone share their knowledge on this topic?

Thanks,

Kevin.

Only one under the ignition switch on mine. Must have been added by previous owner(s) to make passenger happy😄

I've never seen a Pagoda with two courtesy lights..., except mine now.  Because I've built an after market AC system into a console that spans from the instrument panel to the tunnel, I had to move my driver's courtesy light and to provide light to the passenger floor, I added one to that side.

To make them individually controllable like the original heater and the new AC, I wired them with rocker switches using the attached schematic that I designed, installing the control switches on the sides of the console.  Each can be controlled to be switched manually "ON", manually always "OFF" or "ON" when either door opens.  They worked fine when I tested them.  I think that's how MB would have done it had they wanted one on each side, and that was my objective.  When I'm done with the car, the lights will be in the under dash panels.  The wire colors in the schematic are in case I ever have to repair them.

Oh!  The three wires that drive this schematic are the three wires that hooked to the original courtesy light.
