Rev counter rattling
« on: March 25, 2016, 17:13:55 »
Hi there,

the rev counter of my 250 SL of November 1967 sometimes makes a very loud and annoying noise, something between rattling and whistling. When it did it first, a long time a go, the inner side of the counter glass got gradually dirty with some kind of grey dust, which I managed to clean by carefully removing the chrome ring.

There seems to be no obvious reason for that: it may start at any moment. It will last between 2 and 10 minutes, then fade a little and stop as suddenly as it started. In one or two occasions, I noticed that the noise started after driving on a bump on the road, and it also happened that it stopped thanks to a bump on a road.

I have ordered a new cable for the rev counter, however it might come from the counter itself. Has anyone experienced something similar, and if so what was the solution if any ? Is there anything that can be done on the rev counter to fix it (replacement at MB is in excess of 1200 euros... )?

Thanks for your feedback which will be much appreciated.

Marc.
