early 230SL starter and alternator
« on: October 05, 2014, 18:48:00 »
Hello,
I just ordered a remanufactured Bosch SR 59X starter and a remanufactured Bosch 35 amp alternator for my 64 230SL. Now that I've ordered them, I'm starting to wonder if I should have ordered them through Bud's or SLS..
Will the starter and alternator be simple bolt-ons or will I need to do some modifications to my wiring? Note that I have an early 230 with the four alternator terminals (vice a plug).

Reason I ask,,,I noticed a string from several years back regarding the Bosch SR 59X and changing/rewiring the ballast resistor (huh?). Wihat does the ballast have to do with the starter? thanks in advance for any reassurance regarding my order..thanks, Charles

Chafles, the later  starter is definitely a plus. More power easier to find. The alternator is a bit more complex. The wiring changes from ring terminal connections to a plug connection.

I noticed that that regular auto stores such as Autozone and advanced Auto carry Alternators and starters for 230 and 280 SL. I was surprized to find an alternator for 280SL at advanced Auto with lifetime warranty for only $75. It came with the correct plugin fitting. Check these stores out.

yes, unfortunately, the auto parts stores I checked only had the later model alternators with a plug connection. I have an early 230 with four ring terminals (vice a plug) and I don't want to modify my wiring.  I decided to go with my original alternator and replace the brushes.  thanks, Charles
