Heated Rear Window - Reproduction
« on: March 15, 2013, 19:19:27 »
Dear All,

I have been looking for a heated rear window, but failed to find one...

I have looked through the posts here under "heated rear window" and "heated glass" and found one post by David about getting a heated glass pane - so I kindly ask for the supplier name.

But if this fails, I am not sure where to look for one - does anybody have a source of heated rear window, looking like an original one?

The "fall back option" I have: I found a company in Poland who are producing automotive glass for car manufacturers, but they also started reproducing glass panes for classic cars (using Pilkington glass). They do front and side panes for Pagoda already, they are aiming at doing the rear as well. They said they can look at doing them heated, they just need to see how it looked like.

I took all the information I could find here. The picture, actually, is missing and a bit more detailed information on dimensions.

So if there are no suppliers of this type of glass, I will be kindly asking you for the missing pieces of information and give it to the glass manufacturer, sort of "pro publico bono", so that we do have a supplier.

Best,
Pawel

All I can remember about seeing the odd original one is that the elements ran up and down and were very fine wires laid between the two panes of glass. I think the 450SL top is designed the same way.

Have you contacted Gernold at SL Tech?  He should be able to help you out but be prepared for it to cost a small fortune.

Pawel,

The solution maybe even easier: I have the heated window in my hardtop, so if you want you can (or have a specialist) measure, look etc.

Thank you for responses!

I have the impression that the glass looks like e.g. heated windscreen in some of the modern Ford or Volvo cars...

I have sent an e-mail to SL Tech - we will see.

Stan, thank you very much for your kind offer to take a look at your treassure! I will do that with pleasure!

I think what I will do is to get to the glass manufacturer and describe the item and technology that goes with it. I will see what they say - are they able to reproduce it or not and if yes - how much would a piece cost.

I am afraid the "Therglass" technology may be an issue. They may be able to make the pane look just like most rear heated windows these days - with the thicker net of wires.

I will let you know.

Thanks again!

Small update on heated window: SL Tech does not work; I sent the information I had collected to the manufacturer, we will see what they say. I think they may know the technology, as it is used, I think, for front window heating in some of the Ford and Volvo cars - or at least is similar by your descriptions.
