Metallic Paint what models had it and from when
« on: March 07, 2013, 01:32:12 »
We in Australia are having our 50th Year celebrations on the 17th March in Australias' capital city, Canberra.

Part of that day will include a show and shine with a mini concours.
This is turning into a serious event based only on the exterior of the car.

As I was asked to be the chief judge, I wrote a list of inspection critera including the use of metallic paint.

My understanding is that metallic paint was only available on the 280SLs, however I have had it pointed out to me
by a knowledgeable source that metallic paint was available as an option on all Pagoda models .

For correctness I need to know when metallic paint was first available on the Pagoda models and please include your reference.

Heaven forbid that someone should not win the concours because a person(me) doesn't have the correct information.

Please, people who actually know for sure.. Achim, Joe, DR
Thanks for your help

I'm not going to say I know for sure but here's my reason why I believe this:

DB 180 was used on 190SL's and 300SL's before Pagoda production began. DB 180 is metalic silver and I know it was used on 230SL's. If there were other colours of metalic used then they were also available but I don't know which they would be.

It's true that most of what they they used were non metalic straight colours but they did use some metailic on the early cars. Sorry, but that's all I have.

Bob,

The other problem you have with your judging criteria that I read last night is that it apparently is a closed bonnet judging but without looking at the paint tag in the engine bay, you cannot tell if the car is correct, or if the hubcap colours are correct to the hard top etc, all data that is on the plate on the LH side of the inner guard.  Maybe you need to have the bonnet open as well for correct judging.  You as the Chief Judge, may want to re think the criteria.

Hey DR, drmb, and Garry, georgem

Thanks for your responses.

I will eliminate the metallic paint from the criteria list.

Garry,
These guidelines were my musings based around the exterior which is what I was given to work with.
I was trying to give some guidelines because of the very limited area to be judged.
One thing I did not include was the possibility of someone having only a soft top or even with no hard top and with the soft top down.

I might be the chief judge but all suggestions are welcome and soon.
If you can think of anything I have not thought of please let me know.

I am not in favour of raising the bonnets for judging because of the time constraints.
I have been involved with judging at a number of the local concours days here and I find it time consuming and does not allow the judges very much socialising on the day.

George,
Hopefully it will be a quick process and the car owners will treat the concours event as part of a fun day however not all car owners will see it as a "friendly" .

The ~60 cars to be assessed will be judged by different people so all we can do is hope for an honest outcome.

cheers

What we have done in the past is to have the different teams go over their notes and add up their scores which will give each team their best car. After doing that, all the teams should then meet and decide which of the 5 or 6 cars are the best and then narrow it down to the top 3 after that.

Here are the MBCA Concours d'Elegance guidelines and score sheets. Maybe they can be adapted for your use.

If you would like some further background/information for the concours. Pete Lesler and I teach the concours judging school for the Mercedes Club of America. I have a powerpoint presentation set that I would be happy to forward to you.

PM sent with the details.

Thank you all for your advice.

I have looked at all the downloads.

DR Dan i like the simplicity of your approach.

I will make time to meet with all the folk who have volunteered as judges and hone the process
so that we do not offended too many.

cheers
