Carpet Edge Finish (Trimming?) Near Gear Selector
« on: March 01, 2013, 21:08:19 »
Hello!

A question, as I did not manage to find this information in the posts...

Does anybody have or has an access to manufacturer who can offer a rubber "collar" as carpet edge finishing (trimming?) around the gear selector base? I tried with many upholsterers in The US and in Europe and everybody uses vinyl or leather band for this, while, as I have seen on the original cars pictures it should be a sort of black rubber collar.

Can anybody help get one?

Best,
Pawel

Yes, Pawel.

That thing you are mentioning

(called 111 997 1081 Tülle Grommet 230SL, 250SL up to serial #001092 )

is NLA from the dealer.. :P

... and is not correct for your 280 SL anyway.
The 280 has the same worked-in ring that John "The Lews" shows on his numerous flickr pics of his phantastic 250 SL
or which you can also see on the rare stick shift survivors which Brian Peters (www.motoringinvestments.com) sometimes offers.

Not available separately and hard to be reproduced correctly.

I recommend you live with what is available today as aftermarket product....

... unless you are able to find one of the few leftovers "new old stock" center carpet mats for your stick shift car.
Rare, but they do show up from time to time... ;)

but generally even rarer in the carpet color you just need .... :-\

Good luck,

Achim

Achim, many thanks!

This clarifies a lot.

Actually, the idea for "rubber collar" I got from looking at the "Holy Grail" (280SL) on the Motoring Investments page you quoted.

If you say that it is generally accepted to use the band - that is what I will go for, maybe some day I will find the correct piece.

Thanks for clarification - very helpful!

Here is a photo of my original tunnel carpet and shifter trim ring. My car has a manual transmission but I believe the pattern is the same as the automatic. Unfortunately, the carpet "bonded" to the tunnel over the years and was damaged while being removed to get at the shifter bushings.

Couldn't find its part number anywhere  :(. The manual shift trim is everywhere though.

All I could find is what looks like the circular grommet for the manual - 111 997 10 81, which is what Achim has listed.

Yes, the manual, as it is a round one, would be easier to get. The automatic one is much more difficult. Probably I would have to live with what I can get...

Thank you everyone!
