The Earl Camino
« on: April 29, 2011, 21:53:31 »
Yesterday I bought the 1973 Chevrolet El Camino that featured in many an episode of the TV series 'My Name is Earl' that ran for 4 seasons a few years ago. The car was auctioned twice in the past year and yesterday I managed to get in touch with the person who bought it at the second auction.

link to the first auction - it's the only El Camino and the car is red with a blue driver's side door:

http://www.originalprop.com/blog/2010/05/02/mecum-auctions-original-spring-classic-auction-features-cars-from-the-cinema-vehicles-collection-may-19-23-in-indianapolis/

I am now working out the logistics which, if all goes according to plan, has me and my 12-year old son in a couple of weeks picking up the car in Minnesota and dropping it off at Joe and Mary Alexander's in Blacklick, Ohio from where it will be further transported and shipped to the Old Country. Where it will serve as the family truckster and do light duty around the country house in France, side by side to the Pagoda.

I will follow this up with regular updates here. P.s. I plan to change absolutely nothing to the car, besides whatever regular maintenance it needs.

Cees

It must be the time for buying 'other' cars and getting them to Joe's,  I bought an 1970 E Type yesterday that is in Georgia with the intent of getting it to Joe's and then driving it to LA (a short shake down trip) and Tom Colitts for a LH to RH conversion after PUB. then ship back to OZ some time later in the year.

My Pagoda is in the repairers at the moment, I feel like I have been unfaithful to her whilst she is away :o ;D

Gary,

Congrats, I was watching that car on Ebay and thought it looked beautiful.  The last I had checked it it was in the uper 30's and still had not met reserve.  I thought it was going to require much more to take it so nice buy.

See, now my topic has been highjacked!  Where are the mods when you need them ;)

Update on the Elky (as I've learned is the 'Pagoda' nickname equivalent for El Caminos. Warning: some of this will be non-interesting to many if not most of you.

It turned out to be too difficult to incorporate into the logistics / shipping plan a stop in Ohio. So now I have a transporter working to pick up the car in Minnesota and having it containered via Texas to Lelystad, The Netherlands, where it will be cleared through customs on the current US tags but not imported to Holland. I will pick it up from there and drive it to Geneva where I will present it to the 'DMV' to get a Swiss registration for it.

I obtained two quotes for the whole logistics and shipping bit. One from a French company that advertises itself in classic car magazines as the numero uno in France. They were very nice and responsive and if I would just sign on the dotted line, for a bit over $10,000 they would get the car to France and through customs for me. Import duties would then be additional. Another quote from a Dutch company for the same service, except not to Paris but to Lelystad, was $3,000. As I've said before on these forums, it pays to shop around.

The purchase price is now on its way to my agent's US bank account who forwards it to the seller before picking up the car. Still a lot of faith involved in a transaction like this, since I never saw the car, never met the seller nor the agent, and don't actually know whether either is legitimate e.g. whether the seller actually owns the car or any car remotely similar to it. Still, I am 99.9% confident all will be well. Watch this space for updates though.

Then for the importing / titling part. In France, the import duty for such an old (30+ years) is 5.5%. In The Netherlands it used to be about the same, however since January 1st it is now 19%. Quite a difference. In Switzerland, because I have diplomatic status here, I can not only import the car at 0% duty, it will also not be liable for any road tax and any gasoline will be untaxed (remember this is a V8 454 cubic inch / 7 liter car with an even larger carbon footprint than our Pagodas). It will be registered on CD-plates -imagine this shabby red El Camino with a blue-door-and-dent tooling around on CD-plates- and I can use one set of plates and insurance for 2 cars: basically you put the plates on the car you're going to drive that day and the other car, in my case one of the modern Volvos, stays in the garage plateless- one insurance policy for both as you cannot drive both at the same time. Now in France presumably with an old car like this there would be no adjustments to conform to French reglations whatsoever (e.g. keep the MPH speedometer) while in The Netherlands and Switzerland there would be some.

Finally, the insurance part. For transportation, the car has some basic insurance, not for small damages but for major things, or so I understand. However, to get the car from Lelystad to Geneva, there are two options: (1) someone/I drive the car on the road, 600 miles, or (2) a transporter moves it for me on a trailer. Needless to say this second option would be more expensive and less fun for me. Plus then it would be delivered to some place in Geneva but from there unmovable until and unless insured. Luckily, there is one insurance company in Switzerland that does insure foreign-titled cars for a limited time for a limited group of clients, and this just happens to be my regular insurance company, so we're good to go.

All these details will be forgotten once the car is here safely, imported, registered and insured on its CD plates, and then it will be just like any other Swiss car. Well, almost.

Cees,

Sounds a bit like some "foreign intrigue"; congratulations--I think.  Let me know when you want to be congratulated!

Why don't you get someone to drive it from Minnesota to Ohio?  Why container it there?

Hi Michael - the defining moment for me will be when I get handed the keys and papers in Lelystad, insurance papers in back pocket, can see that it is actually the car I think I bought, it has the right engine in it which runs and is properly connected to the drivetrain, so I wil lbe ready to head to the first gas station to be off on the road to Geneva. All this will become clear within a couple of minutes so therefore a 'defining moment'. I will take pictures.

It won't be containered in Minnesota but will be put on a regular transporter and then only in the Texas port will it go into a container. I tried to work out a two-step approach with a stop in Ohio but it proved too difficult to match that with a travel plan that worked for me and was still affordable as well ...

Haha!

Yes, I dit want the El Camino over the Mercedes although that is a beautiful car (in fact, it's everything the Elky is not) but since I already have an even nicer Mercedes and I have a special bond with the Elky, that's where we went. And of course the value of the Mercedes would be a factor higher than the American Muscle car.

if you're ever in the Geneva neighbourhood let me know! Chances are either the Pagoda or the El Camino will be around, and there's a couple other members in the area so we could get together for a mini-event. In fact I just saw Ashok yesterday and we're going to organise something this summer.

Here's a pic of the car just after it arrived in Texas, at 'Holland Ranch', last Monday:

I've sorted out the importing to Switzerland and how to get temporary Swiss plates (valid for 4 days only) and insurance that will allow me to collect the car in Holland and drive it to Geneva.

Probably it will take about 6 weeks before it's here.

Haha! You and my wife.

I did just source another door (happens to also be blue) just in case the authorities give me a hard time about the dent. I don't think they will, and I would just put the replacement door on temporarily, so it can go back to the current condition as soon as possible.

My wife now agrees to keep the dent, but she would much prefer to see the hood in blue or red instead of primer color. That won't happen either though. With the Pagoda I am not such a stickler for originality, but I want to keep this Elky 100% original!

Cees, that El Camino sure looks at home at the Holland Ranch. License tags on the fence. I wonder if the ranch owner could be a distant cousin of Joe's.

Keep us posted, can't wait to see a photo of it in front of your house in France. BTW, When does Joy arrive?

You guys ...

When I pick up the car I will surely stop by Peter's for food, gas (yes Michael), and perhaps a kroket or frikandel. Although I know Peter as a great cook so probably it wll be up a few notches from that.

Joy already called me to get directions (as did Catalina and Kenny). Seriously, she is a character in that show. The owner of the Holland Ranch does remind me a bit of Joe, so who knows.

Stay tuned for updates, although it will be some time while it makes its way over the ocean.

Funny you should say that Michael; earlier this week Tom Sargeant treated me to a nice dinner in Alexandria and a colleague of his who joined us described it just like that: a piece of pop culture.

Then after dinner Tom treated me to something even more special: drove me back to my hotel in the Tunis Beige Pagoda, top down - we caught lots of attention! Thanks again Tom!

Look how much fun you are having now, and you have nothing but photos and a depletion of your bank account!  Imagine what will be when you actually get it!  Better get some good old American accoutrements.  Muscle shirts, some empty shotgun shells, empty beer cans, a CB radio, and any other good old "redneck" paraphernalia you can think of.  Oh yeah, a lot of pennies, nickels and maybe a dime or two, strewn haphazardly about the interior.

Come on guys, what did I leave out?  What else does Cees need to decorate the inside of this beast?

Live the dream! :D

Just a couple of McDonald cheeseburger wrappers, maybe a few stale French fries, the usual cigarette butts and a collection of maps, tablets and other assorted papers carefully place on the dash so as not to blow out of the window.

Yes, I think from the 'My Name is Earl' series I have a good idea about what the stereotype 'white trash' is. Still, with my guns and tattoos, I think I will match the car just fine ...

Never heard of this - so I looked it up and here is a nice compilation:

I'm not sure Glenn - for now my favorite song to match this car is 'East bound and down' by Jerry Reed, from Smokey and the Bandit (it features in one of the episodes):

Cees, just watch a few episodes of the trailer park boys and you will learn all you need to know when driving that car. :D ;D

Trailer Park Boys was filmed mostly in Nova Scotia, Canada.  These guys weren't red necks, they're hosers. They expanded the meaning of white trash to a whole new level of consciousness. Some of the funniest stuff I've even seen.
The scene where Julienne walks in on Randy and Mr. Layhee during one of their scesions is priceless. Mr. Layhee says to Julienne, '' You won't tell anyone about what you saw here, eh bud? ''
'' OK...... I won't say anything.....''
Julienne leaves Mr. Layhee's trailer, looks at the camera and says, '' Man, this is gonna be hard keeping this one to myself....''

Let's not forget the episode where Ricky blows Conky's head off. ( Conky was Bubble's alter ego in a puppet, so no one actually died )

BK wants to know what that nice lady and kid are doing with a crazy man?  Cees, I hope the Earl Camino is making you very happy because we have surely enjoyed your mad exuberance.  My mother always thought you should indulge in silly fun whenever you get the chance because life is too important to be taken seriously.  I hope you have many, many miles of smiles in the beast.

Thanks Ray! And thanks Peter, for your hospitality as always.

Right after these photos were taken, I dropped off my wife and son at the Hilversum train station and headed off to our second home in France, some 400+ miles south via Antwerp, Brussels, Luxemburgh, Metz and Nancy. The Camino was carrying its first payload: around 100 gallons (400 liters) of special enamel paint that the missus uses for her paintings, picked up earlier that (Fri-) day elsewhere in Holland.

The trip went off without a hitch. Although it was clear that this car had not been driven for quite some time. Someone had pulled the number 1 spark plug lead and forgot to put it back on. Trouble with a powerful V8 is that you don't notice right away when one cylinder is out to lunch. But after about 30 miles I pulled over to check and found this first little problem. Other little problems:

- the turn signal indicators did not work
- neither did the brake lights, reverse lights, horn, and windshield wipers - and it was raining on and off
- the battery cables were very loose, so neither of the two (?) batteries was really charging
- the distributor was also very loose, easily turnable by hand
- the outside rearview mirrors were all so loose that adjusting them to have proper vision would only gave an effect for 1 mile at a time; the inside mirror fell off when we went over a speedbump loaded down with the 100 gallons of paint
- of course, the dashboard lights were also not working, but I was using my GPS system so at least I knew what speed I was going

In fact, the only things that did work were the engine, brakes, ventilator and most of the running lights.

Over the weekend, I was able to fix everything (mostly just corroded fuses in their fittings) except the reverse lights (pobably something with the switch) and the distributor. There must be a mile of unused wiring under the dash and hood. I also fixed a million small things in the interior and under the hood: missing small screws, bolts, misaligned or loose stuff. Vacuuming and general cleaning. The car is now still looking very ratty but it's at least clean.

Then, today, I drove the car from France to Geneva, another 200-some miles. Now that most everything functions, the car runs like a dream, really effortless due to the 454 CI, 7-something liter V8 with 245 HP and lots of torque. Strangely enough, it only consumes a shade more than the Pagoda! (7.2 km per liter as opposed to 7.5 for the Pagoda), with an old-fashioned carburetor. Go figure.

I got thumbs up and the douaniers (customs officers) were 'amused'. You very rarely see US-registered cars driving around here, and of course even fewer that look as tattered as this one.

Will try to post a few pictures next .... and more updates if adventures call for them ...

Here's pics of some floorpan restoration work now being done:

Next is replacing the front springs, the speedometer cable, and some new window rubber and then the car should be ready for technical inspection to be titled in Switzerland.

Cees,

I just happened to read a story about America's "Spy Plane", the U2 and its variants.  Article is here: http://www.airspacemag.com/military-aviation/Wingman-in-a-Pontiac.html

Apparently, [in a nutshell] you cannot land this plane w/o a high speed car on the ground, with a U2 pilot driving the car.  Over the years, many cars have been used (plane has been around for over 50 years)

And, you guessed it: one of the designated cars to land this plane was an EL CAMINO.  (see note on page 2 of the article).

That's funny, thanks Michael for that. I'll bet the El Camino forum members don't even know this, but I will let them know.

Update is that the car last week was finally approved for Swiss registration, so it's now officially a Swiss car. I replaced the shocks and front springs, and did a host of other, smaller things, and now it drives like a dream. Very quick also, as I think I reported in another thread.

Cool car Cees!

I had a freind in high school that had one of these 454s. It was black and he had it hot rodded w/ chromed cragars and lifted the rear up a bit. It was the coolest, fastest car around and of course he had all the girls.

Some cars exude a certain aura and girls are attracted to that. As we say in Texas, like a fly on stink! Maybe not a great simile for that :o

That guy's 454 El Camino had all the right stuff and the girls just hung all over it. I think he guy could have looked like Shrek and the girls would have still been attracted. The car was that cool!

Thanks Michael - I actually saw that commercial a few days ago, as of course it was immediately picked up by the El Camino forum guys ...there's also a great scene floating on Youtube from the new GI Joe movie with Bruce Willis shooting at the bad guys while laying in the back of a speeding 4th gen Camino and getting shot at. My favorite line is when Bruce, asked after the ordeal whether he's allright by the beautiful (of course) female Camino driver, replies "Cholesterol's a bit high" ... Caminos rock!

Yesterday, another Earl Camino was auctioned off by Mecum, the same auctioneer that brokered the sale, for $6,000, of my car in 2010. So as it turns out there were 2 El Caminos that we used in the TV series 'My Name is Earl'. This second one was sold for $8,000 but without the certificate of authenticity and all the studio parafernalia that came with mine. It's almost the same visually, with two exceptions: blue overspray under the blue door that is supposed to be from another car (hence there should be no overspray) and the rear sliding window is visibly bent inwards. Under the hood the car has a small block 350 whereas mine actually has the 454 that the fender emblems promise. All in all it looks like this was a back-up car to mine, and a good copy at that. The auction was flagged to me by Camino forum fellows a couple of days ago. I called Mecum to point out that neither in yesterday's auction nor in the one they did for my car back in 2010 did they mention that there was a second car. Of course they never returned my call or replied to my email: seems the auction business is a bit dodgy. I hope the buyer comes forward so we can swap 'Earl stories' ...

Every star has a stand in, and or a stunt-double. SOP in movies.  Cars no exception. There was more than one of nearly every movie star car, or TV car star.

http://www.allpar.com/history/christine.html  Notable quote: My 1958 Plymouth Fury was one of over twenty cars used in the movie Christine.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aston_Martin_DB5 Notable: The car used in the film was the original DB5 prototype, with another standard car used for stunts. To promote the film, the two DB5's were showcased...(that's four if you are counting!)

http://www.imperialclub.com/Yr/1966/BlackBeauty/  Notable: He created only two cars for the show...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starsky_and_Hutch Notable: They looked at lease stock and chose two 1975 2-door Gran Torinos.

So, if there are only two Earl Caminos, and only one pedigreed with papers, not too bad, Cees!

Updates on my Earl Camino:

It's featured in this article that came out earlier this week and otherwise is about some of what I do for a living, not everyday work:

www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2016/02/09/466143083/meet-the-repo-man-for-global-health-skim-off-a-grant-hell-make-you-pay?utm_source=npr_newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_content=20160212&utm_campaign=npr_email_a_friend&utm_term=storyshare

Other update is that the car will be going to its new owner in Halifax, Canada, next month. The family will be moving from Geneva in the near future making it difficult to hold onto too many cars. We've had a great run together and it's been great fun to own this piece of American muscle / TV history.
