headlight update

I would like to replace  my euro reflectors and bulbs (1964 230SL) with one of the aftermarket "driving light" or "off road" assemblies that offer much advanced
lighting.  They are compact and round or oval in shape and should somehow tuck in behind the original outer glass as they are only in the 4" range and quite shallow in addition to being inexpensive.  Has anyone taken this approach with success?
