If you're interested in originality, do NOT buy this toolkit for a Pagoda:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=43998&item=2454143799

This is from a much later Mercedes. Perhaps the seller means an R 107 280 SL when he says it's a "280 SL toolkit."

Perhaps we should dedicate this discussion thread to historically correct tool kits for the W113.  If we combine pictures with toolkit content lists and descriptions of the pouches (material, number of tool pockets, etc.) then we could have some very precise descriptions that people could refer to for many years.  Can anyone start?  I did not get a tool pouch with my 230SL.

Hello Doug,
This is not a 280-SL tool kit. It is not even a W107 280-SL tool kit.
The original W113 280-SL kit is easily recognized by the Pouch which is a vinyl type material rather than canvaas. An incomplete illustration of tools and the pouch is in the owner's parts book and the dealer parts book. Many of the much more common sedans of that era had the same tools in their tool kits. The biggest giveaway is the much nicer vinyl tool pouch on the SL's. The locking pliers are another item unique to the SL tool pouch. Many of the tools in the kit are not shown in this dealers parts book illustration:

Download Attachment: 280-SL tool kit.jpg
50 KB

The ebay tool kit shown, is probably from a much more modern Mercedes. The two piece tire iron, and the flat alloy wheel staring peg indicate a much later Mercedes.
I am sure someone in the group can supply a good photo of an original tool kit.

Hello Naj,
Yes that kit is mosly correct. There may be a tool or two missing. The exact content may have varied very slightly depending on the year. I know the long handled "channel lock" style pliers  were in some of the kits. Also the fuse assortment on the W113 cars should have all white 8 amp fuses.

I vaguely remember this being discussed on the yahoo site.

So what about the earlier cars?

Like Rodds' 230 SL, my 250 SL didn't come to me with a toolkit.

Anybody have a picture of the early toolkits? Were there changes between the very early ones and the kits for the 250SL and the 280 SL?

Hello all,
This toolkit comes from a W201 190 series model as it is to have a compact tire bolt breaker bar to fit into the tight confines of the trunk.

I believe that I have the entire original tool kit for my 69 280SL. When the car gets back (we are still fiddling with the ignition issues) I will take some pictures of it and post them. Should be the end of this week, with any luck.

Our Photo Gallery has a tool kit photo...

My car came with the original tool kit...the tools and wrapper in the kit in the Photo Gallery image (link below) looks correct.

I'm not sure if the plastic fuse puller (very elusive) was still part of the kit for the later cars.

Hello Richard,
That tool kit in the photo gallery is correct and complete. Almost all of the tools can be collected from more common sedan tool kits. The nicer tool bag and the long handled pliers are hard to come by.
An optional lubrication tool kit was offered by the dealer. This kit contained special oil drain plug tools, a spedcial grease gun for the door hinges, and the very sought after Merceds-Benz engraved, chrome tire pressure gauge in a blue wooden and felt lined box! I was lucky enough to find one see photo;

Download Attachment: Aux Tool Pouch 2.jpg

Download Attachment: tools and pouch 2.jpg

Some earlier Mercedes cars 190-SL, 300-SL had the tire pressure gauge and special drain plug wrench included in their standard tool kits.

What did the kit look like for the earlier cars, 230 and 250 SLs

Were they the same grey folder or were they the red fabric wrap up?

Yes, the tools could work for a Pagoda, but this is not a 280SL toolkit.

Take a look at Joe Alexander's post of Jan. 18, 2004.  In the ilustration that Joe has provided check out #4.  I know its use but not sure what it is called.  I need one.  Does anyone know a source for this item?  I would also like to know about the plastic fuse puller.  Are these also available?  Even if not original to our tool kits it would be a nice addition. :D

What you're referring to is a "wheel centering tool".  It's used when mounting the wheel on the car.  I would contact MB as well as 4 or 5 other parts suppliers and see who has the best price.

Richard Madison's pictures are of the period correct tool kit that came with our cars. A supplemental tool kit as pictured by Joe Alexander shows special lube units and wrenches as well as the tire pressure gauge and over-the-counter part sold back in the 1960s.

Two fuse pullers (not pictured) black plastic one with inside ball on each end was replaced with one with out as these tend to break. Also the tire centering tool that sits snuggly in the tire wrap lower pocket is often missing. This item was supplied with the sedans and coupes of the same peroid and may be found in recycle yards.

The tool wrap was made of remnants of Mercedes-Benz Tex meterial in different colors grey, brown black ,blue and soft top material as you open the wrap, the inside material is green with the embossed Mercedes Benz star to the right.

Proper care and cleaning of the material is important to keep it looking nice.

One other item to add. The famous Bosch trouble lights. These started with the 300SL and toward production change of our car they where given to Bosch to sell where they receive a grey cord. This again is a rare item and was at one time an over the counter item at the local Mercedes-Benz parts counter.

I'm going to let Bob Geco's post do the talking on the subject of toolkits.

My posting was really a warning to people who frequent this site. I hate seeing sellers on ebay who label items as W113 parts erroneously. As we are all painfully aware, when it's a 113 part and not a run-of-the-mill sedan part, it's suddenly worth a bundle. It seems as if sellers sometimes exploit this fact. In fact, there's a 114 headlight surround on ebay right now that's described as a 280 SL part. (I e-mailed the seller and told him. And in this case, it seems it was an innocent error.)

As always, let the buyer beware!

Here's another toolkit erroneously labeled as a 280 SL toolkit by, I believe, the same seller:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=2492229157&category=42606

(The one good thing about this kit is it has the fuse pliers.)

If someone is intrested in this latest tool kit auction I know the seller will deal with you off ebay.  I know this because he contacted me on one of his previous auctions and was negotiating prices.  I had the highest bid at the time so I thought it was in the bag.  Then the seller ended the auction early.

Correct - Watler put a 220D engine in a W113 SL body.  I don't know what to call it:

A few months ago there was a toolkit for a 600 Grand on eBay.  This particular kit was in new condition with some of the tools wrapped in wax paper.  Although not correct for a W113 I feel it wouldn't look all that out of place.  Extra tools along with a hammer to boot!  You can never havee enough of the right tools.

Sedan and early 230SL tool kits mounted with slots in the bag to the back section of the trunk below the trunk lid opening. There was also a holder fot the tire alignment tool place in a simular fashion. Later 1966 and on W113 had tool wrap kits in the spare tire wrap. when opening the tire rap there is a pocket for the lug wrench and below a pocket for the tire alignment tool.
It is  sad that most of these kits got lost or misplaced I had to hunt down a correct tool kit with the famous fuse pliers and fuse box with MBZ logo. the wraps as tey ere called were mad out of spare MBZ tex or soft top canvas. An real tool rap will have a green materical inside and the Mercedes-Benz star in bosed in black on the inside. They are far and few left to fine. Two difference jacks were availible an early Bilstein two peice jack and later one peice jack found on 108 and 109 sedans.A tire crock was bolted below the spare as well to place in front or back of the front tires to protect from rolling back.
An optional emergency tool kit pouch was availible from local dealers which included several small wrenches and a tool to lube door hinges as well as a factory tire gauge in a blue box with the star logo. this was seeen in the optional equipment blue cataloge.
Some of these tools can be purchased from German speciality tool houses and sellers you just have to know whatto ask for. the orgianal tools had the Mercedes-Benz stamp andor star imbosed in the wrench, but many of these tools are the same and maufactured by companies like stalwille.
I hope this is formation is help fulland I will try and post pictures with a new ditical camera as soon as I figure how to reduce the size.

The one tool that always seems to be missing from the bag are the water pump pliers.  I have two complete kits sans pump pliers.  I understand that Stamstag sells these.

Has anyone purchased this tool from Stamstag and if so how close is it to the original?

I did purchase one of the water pump pliers from Samstag, and aside from being a bit shiny, it was a good replacement. I am traveling for the Holiday, and can't give you a direct picture or comparison, but I would say they are a very good alternative.

Was it made by HAZET or HEYCO?

Johnny B was nice enough to bring in all sorts of materials at the Blacklick event.  There was tons of literature along with two toolkits.  I looked at the pliers but do not remember the manufacturer. :(

The hammer is probably the last resort in getting things to work properly. :D   Wasn't the 600 dubbed something like "the mechanics playground"?

The water pump lliers is made by Heyco and stamped N300 Chrome silver natural color. The only difference is when Mercedes-Benz put it in the tool roll it had a small star on it. same company.
I cannot seem to fine these from the Heyco file I have but prehaps Andrew at Samsag sales may have some left over in inventory. they sold for aqbout $34.00 USD

One of the International Stars members, Murdoch "Doc" Campbell was a former MBCA National President.  He once had a 600 and said if you have one you really need your own mechanic--full time.

Bob,

I believe Hazet also made that tool. Generally speaking, you're going to find Hazet tools in a W113.

I talked to Andrew at www.samstagsales.com . The water pump pliers is still availible and can be found by going to the BMW tools under trunk tool kits part # 71 11 1 103091 heyco type 300 9/1/2 inches long cost is $27.95 plus shipping.
Do not worry it will not say BMW on the tool.

If you want the star on the pliers I founnd the same water pump pliers in the Mercedes-Benz tools section part # 0005810238 $35.00 each same pliers except with Mercedes-Benz star inbosed into pliers.

Bob, did you happen to ask Andrew if he could get a Hazet brand water pump set?  I believe they also sell Hazet tools.

Received my water pump pliers from Andrew at samsag sales. This is the one with star imbossed on it made by Heyco.Their really is no difference between the Heyco 300 you buy direct from Heyco. with the exception of packaging. The One Mercedes-Benz puts the star logo on cost about $8.00 more just for a tiny star no one will ever see.
The pliers referred to as combination pliers  came in the orginal Mercedes-Benz bag with the Mercedes-Benz blue lable and part# A 000 581 02 38 Whoppie!!! show that to the judges and I do not think you get much of a responce.
Heyco makes quality tools so if you are missing yours , just order the Heyco brand from Samsage sales with out the star and use the $7.00 to buy you self a capachino down at the local Star bucks next time  you take you Pagoda out for a Sunday spin.

I wonder if the equivalent pliers from Hazet are even available today. They stopped including it in the MB toolkits quite awhile back.
