Securing the radiator
« on: July 09, 2025, 03:59:59 »
I wonder if someone would be so kind as to help me. About three years ago I purchased a 280sl which was extremely rusted. I replaced almost all the panels and cut out other rust, had it sprayed with two pak epoxy and final coats. I am now assembling the car but have forgot how the radiator is secured on the LHS, there are just holes but no threads on the oil cooler side. The other side (RHS) has two bolts. How is the radiator secured on the oil cooler side?

Help would be greatly appreciated.

If memory serves, the oil cooler is attached to the radiator then the oil cooler/radiator unit is fastened to the car. The holes you see should match up with the holes in the oil cooler. Two M6 screws with 10mm heads go through the holes you see and the holes in the oil cooler.

None of the parts schematics I have access to (Niemollers, SLS) seem to show a relevant schematic. I'm not at home so I don't have access to my parts book so sorry I can't help with a schematic or part numbers.

Found an old photo and marked the location where the screws go through. Sorry for the poor quality - hope it helps.

Found another old photo. I think I was wrong in my first post. This shows how the oil cooler is attached to the radiator. Then I think there are two odd u-shaped brackets that attach the oil cooler/radiator assembly to the car.

Sorry to chip in...

I do not recall any oddly shaped brackets that hold radiator assembly to the car in W113...

I recall two screws on each side going on both sides through the frame in the body, through rubber pads (stripes, 26 on the picture) and into the radiator...

I hope I am not messing anything here...

I do recall brackets, oddly shaped indeed in Ponton and 190SL.

I think Pawell is right. It looks like there is an upright bracket on the left side front of the body with elongated holes in it. Screws through these holes could enter threads on the side of the oil cooler. Suggest you take a look at the side of the oil cooler, see if there is provision for receiving a screw - guessing it may be M8 (13mm head). You will want to ensure using the correct length so that you don't go through into the oil cooler itself.

The screws are 4pcs N 304017 006016, looks like M6x12 (from conversion table), but check the length, 12mm may be too short.

Do not forget the rubber pads 2pcs A 113 502 00 30 (available at Mercedes).
