Title: Differences in VDO clocks?
Post by: Markp on September 12, 2008, 22:10:59
Over the years I've seen several different VDO clocks in 113's.
Some just say VDO and others say VDO & Kienzle below. Anyone have the specifics of what the differences are? Which models are correct for which clocks, etc?

I have not seen any that just say VDO.  Our 67 250 SL says VDO and Kienzle.  Later cars say Quartz (and are quartz clocks).  I don't know the year of the changeover.

The reason I ask, is that I have a VDO clock the only says VDO on the front and Kienzle on the back case. It's numbered 113 XXXXX on the inside face of the clock and appears to be original from my 1968 Euro spec 280SL.

Mark,

My clock is from a 1966 and only says VDO on the face. It does say Kenzle on the back case. The number on the face is 1135420011.

VDO clocks even in the last Pagodas were not quartz as far as I know...quartz conversion of the non-quartz VDO clocks started many years after 113 production ended.

My previous car was a very late 1971 280SL. It did not have a quartz clock.

...then why do some of the faces of the VDO clocks say "quartz" on them?

Those clocks came later and had a quartz movement.

I think SLS sells a VDO quartz clock for the 113, but it's indeed a later model( which was mounted on the W107 series?).Looks identical, except for the " quartz" logo.

Also, after the mid year update of the 250SL to meet the new safety regulations in the States has a rounded bezel. The early clocks have a more pointed style.

From what I rember. Those quartz movement clocks were not ever used as original equipment on 113 or 107 cars, at least not the ones imported to the USA.

On the 1973 350SL the midddle hole of the 3 center dash vent outlets had a clock fitted there. This clock had similar bezel with the same diameter and movement as the earlier 113 clocks but didn't have the 113's studs on the back for a mounting bracket. The 107 clock had a rubber collar around the bezel that held it into the vent opening by friction.

Somewhere around 1974 when the existing stock of self-winding clock movements was used up both 107 and 113 replacement clocks were then made with a quartz movement, with studs on the back for 113s and without for 107s

107 clock with Kienzle self-winding movement.

In the 1974 450SL the clock (quartz) was relocated into the dial of the tachometer and all 3 of the dash holes had vents in them. On the USA models they were, not sure about other markets.

(edit) After I posted this I looked up the the replacement 113 clock on the EPC, it has the part number 100 542 01 11. The 100 prefix of the part number indicates that this part was made for the 600 series limousines (produced through 76) so the part was not made to be an exact duplicate of the original part, but one of a series of sequential upgrades to the parts used in  production cars. So this could possibly be the reason the "quartz" was printed on the dial.

But, funny enough, they felt the need for adding the "quartz" logo, probably to look more modern! :D

More dash clock photos:

Here is a sampling of the dash clocks that you are likely find in a pagoda.

Left:     Sharp Bezel, original from my 66 230SL, Part #113 542 00 11, date code 11/65.

Center:   Smooth Bezel, Part #113 542 01 11, Date code, 4/69.

Right:    Quartz Replacement Clock, Part #100 542 01 11, date code 12/79.

There may be other variations with subtle differences, but these are the ones I found in my goody box

Collectively we know a lot because we have too much time on our hands!

(and that was an intentional pun on "time" and "hands" for those of you who are little slow. (Oops, there's another one.)

Just to add to the data: my clock only has VDO on the face, and above the shaft, not below like pictured above.  The car is a Sep. 64 230SL.  I am still digging the archives trying to fing the least painful way to replace the lightbulb for it.  Removing the glovebox?  Accessing from underneath?

Not for sure, but the only way is from the glove box, I think...

Yes glove box has to be removed.
