Title: HELP 280SL Part?
Post by: hightec on May 16, 2008, 06:15:31
LHD 1969 SL 280 Auto

From the front of the car on the left hand side above the air filter housing etc is a little black box with an adjustment knob on it. Any idea what it is for?

No idea.  Can you post a picture?  (Saves you 1,000 words.)

Are wires going to and from it?  Are you sure it is not a fuse box.  Some of the small boxes have a large knob type screw bolt to hold down the fuse box top.  Nothing I know of should be in that area of the engine compartment.

I agree with Bob, there should be nothing sitting on top of the air cleaner canister.  If you can't post pictures, how about a better description?

Above = resting on top of the air box, or closer to the firewall?
Little = how many inches in each dimension?
Box = metal, plastic, or what?
Any wires going to/from the box?
Where and how is it attached to the car?  Clips, screws, etc.?
Does it look period-correct (old)?

This does not sound right which makes me think it could be some non standard aftermarket, or even homemade gizmo some previous owner thought up and installed on his own.

When I purchased my car the OE air filter canister had been removed entirely and replaced with some blower type thing with it's own unique air filter so anything is possible.

As the others have already said, photos will really help everybody here help you.
