Title: Wiper Shaft Seal
Post by: bpossel on July 13, 2006, 06:46:54
Yesterday I purchased new wiper shaft seals from my local MB Dealer.  They look like simple rubber washers.  Probably the cheapest items ever purchased!   :) Under 2 bucks!

Has anyone ever replaced these?   :?: Do these simply slip over the shafts on the exterior side?  I can’t seem to locate these on my car???  I have not pulled the glove box out yet to look from the underside.  Is this where they are?

Any advice on how to replace the seals is appreciated!

Thanks!
Bob

Bob,
If the seals are about 3/4 inch diameter and 3/4 inch deep with a small hole at one end, they go under the wiper arms.
If your old ones are chrome, you can remove the old seal from the chrome cup (I used a dremel with sanding wheel) and replace with new.

Hi Naj,

The new rubber seals are about an inch in diameter and about 1/4 inch thick with small hole in center (for the shaft).  My guess is that they slip on the shaft from the underside and "butt" up against the body.

I will work on this one this weekend and update the website.

Thanks,
Bob

Yes, the parts book is showing a flat rubber washer but I would have a look under the wiper arm first.
Remove wiper arm and the big nut holding the outer spindle tube to body. The rubber washer should be under a steel washer....

Hi Naj,

You were correct.  The rubber washer sits beween the body and the metal washer.

Here is the procedure:
Remove the wiper arm cap nut; then the wiper arm; then the spindle cover; then the nut which holds the spindle; then the metal washer; then the rubber washer.

While we are close here -- anyone know if the "wiper cap" (the visible metal sleeve) is still available in metal? Mine are replacements -- came in black rubber.

Doggone it Naj, that's a really good question. Way back when, I recall ordering them (I think mid-90s) -- but don't remember what was wrong with the old ones... were they aluminum? if not, maybe mine were rusty? I just don't know. Anyway, sadly they are probably sitting in a landfill somewhere next to my original clock, my rubber floor mats, my ....  :?

Hi

The caps in stainless are available from SLS in Hamburg.

Bob

I am reviving the old post because I would like to know whether this assembly sequence is still correct.
I received a OEM rubber washer (p/n 000 987 07 41) and am surprised that the ID is only 11.7mm and thus very difficult to slide over the shaft (OD ~ 15 mm). The OD of 29.4 mm is also quite large and the ring does not fit well into the cave around the wiper spindle.

Alfred, I was there a few months ago. I had the same question re: the large rubber washer but I assumed that the tight fit and oversize is intentional for waterproofing.
I coated both sides of the washer with silicone paste, as well as coating the rubber that fits inside the metal cap.
When you take it apart, be careful not to lose the tiny rubber o-ring (used silicone here too) that the securing bolt fits through.

Thanks Andy for the quick reply.
Not sure though I understand what you mean with "the rubber that fits inside the metal cap" and
"the tiny rubber o-ring ..that the securing bolt fits through".
Looking at the picture in the spare parts list and also the photo from SLS I cannot find these parts.  Are they shown here?

Parts number 20 and 21 are for a 230SL/250SL with chrome plated caps. The later anodized caps won't have a seal; at least not one I remember.

Hi Dan,
unfortunately not quite correct.
Check your 230SL Spare Parts LIst Edition A or Edition B and you'll find that these two parts (#20 union nut 1108200048 and #21 seal ring 1109870241) were never installed in W113 cars (Footnote 6 in Editiion B).

Alfred, in the SLS PHOTO, #23  (or #20) show the "rubber (already) inside the metal cap". These are separable, at least in my car (may be #22 or #21, in which case the graphic representation in the parts pic is not very accurate.
Also, on my wipers, part #31 is a tiny o-ring that sits in a round channel in the wiper shaft. In the SLS photo it looks like a metal washer.
IMO, one cause of frozen wipers is water getting past #31 and/or under #23.

I just checked the EPC catalogue. It shows part #31 as a metal waher. I am missing that part, I'll try to get it. That little o-ring is not identified there so it maybe considered part of the wiper arm.

Andy,
the parts graphic that I show (together with the SLS parts photo) comes from the first 230SL Spare Parts List - Edition A.  As I mentioned in my reply to Dan #20 and #21 should be ignored because those were never installed.
Later versions of the spare parts list including the last one for 280SL cars (Edition C) do not show those two items but everything else is exactly the same (including the numbering).
Part #31 is indeed a steel wavy washer and not a rubber O-ring and as you wrote can be lost very easily. Buy one for a spare (p/n 000 990 1748) dealer list price is $0.50.

The 230SL/early 250SL cars had bright chrome caps (#23) that were changed to matte chrome for later cars and the hex insert were glued in and are made from white/grey plastic (Nylon?). They crack easily - especially when the cap is used to turn the hex nut (#22) on the shaft  :o  -  and I assume that the black rubber inserts you mention - and which are sold by SLS - are replacement parts; but perhaps original caps on later 280SL cars came with replaceable black rubber hex inserts, I don't know.

But going back to my original question, I am still surprised about the size of the rubber washer #25.

Alfred,
In 2008 I purchased from MB the washers you are referring to, part # 381 987 00 41, as the centre hole was too small and they are thicker than the original I did not use them.  I still have the unopened packet.
In 2014 I required two more, I ordered these again through my local dealer, this time when they arrived the part # was 000 987 00 41, the washers were the same dimensions.
Is it another case of MB's rationalisation policy?
To overcome the problem I obtained some rubber (not as thick as the above washers) as I had the required size of punch for the centre hole I made my own.

Hi Eric,
it is either rationalisation or rationing policy!  ;)
The strange thing is that this rubber washer had the p/n 000 987 07 41 since about August 1964 for all three W113 types, the earlier 230SL had p/n 000 987 17 41 and I wonder what that one looked like.

Hi Alfred et al:
As you know my 280SL is from the last week of production in 2/71.
145 were made after mine.

I just checked my wipers , because they are the last thing to take out and lubricate, then I finally can put my car back together.
the SLS picture you posted is what is on my car. I noticed I am missing #31 the 2 small washers.
Also in my Parts book Edition c lists #25 as a spring washer. #25 on my car looks like a fiber washer and is stuck to the metal, also a tight fit around the shaft.
This definitely will stop leaks.
So the sls picture has a black washer in the picture. Is it rubber?
Maybe it was changed to rubber by M/B or after market people..
Now I have to make a decision , to take off that fiber washer or leave it alone. It looks old.
There is not any rubber washers on my wipers.

Tom M

John 49er sent me these photos that demonstrate that the rubber ring is just about as wide as the chrome cap.
Thanks John!

You know, I'm not sure what you guys are looking at, but my shaft has a C-clip where 49er's looks like an O-ring.

John,
this is a black DIN7993 snap ring or circlip with a round cross section that can be mistaken for an O-ring. 49er's is most likely correct, but it is difficult to see.
We are not looking at that one but at #25 in the parts graphic.
