Title: I finally bought a 1967 250SL
Post by: SpeedModel on May 20, 2023, 16:34:33
I have been a long time owner of a 1970 W111 Cabriolet, but I'm delighted to have just acquired a 120,000 mile, 1967 250SL which is quite original, with exception of a high quality bare metal respray. It came with history file for the car since new which included the original order request and delivery documents. The car is lovely with exception of a waxoyl type spray that was applied to the engine compartment when new.  I believe it can be easily removed with dry ice blasting without causing harm to paint or other components. Here's a short walk around video - https://vimeo.com/826525467

Congrats - that is a very nice model to have -- it's an EARLY 250 -- it's desirable.   If you don't know why, it will be something interesting for you to research here.   The photos on the mecum site show the engine bay --- looks like maybe undercoating spray.   If the car is mostly rust-free, you might have a really good buy at that price.

Enjoy,

Eric, congrats on the purchase! I am the person you were bidding against.  :D. I would have kept going but already bought a couple of other cars there.

It is a good car! I think the engine bay is black paint, most likely done when the firewall pad (incorrect) was installed. Also right lower heater control lever is sticking.

I'm happy to see a member got the car. Let me know if you have any questions about it.

Early one, best of both 113 worlds.

Hi Vander,

Pleased to make your acquaintance, and thank you for not bidding higher!

Initially I thought it was paint too when I saw it in the auction photos. But when I saw it in person it looked more like non-rubberized undercoating. Today I took a rag with little splash of mineral spirits, held my breath, gave it a wipe and viola. The black stuff came off and shiny clean paint was underneath.

Where do you suggest I get a new firewall pad?  Authentic Classics has one closely akin to original, but they are out of stock.

Eric,

Welcome to the Group.  As a full member you have access to the full Tech Manual and you will find there a list of suppliers.  I believe it is sortable. However some such as Buds Benz. Authentic Classics, Vintage Euro Parts come to mind

Just as a matter of interest, is the gear lever around the correct way,  it flashed past in the video but i thought it was sloping towards the rear, the incorrect way.

I spotted this at Vintage.  You might call and ask for Nelson. He’s quite nice, approachable and always has helped me with reliable information.
