Title: Carpet and or CocoMats: fixing to the floor?
Post by: mdsalemi on May 16, 2023, 12:21:07
I ordered and got a note back from CocoMats:

We are currently unfamiliar with the mat attachments for your vehicle. There are 2 ways we can move forward.

Option 1: You can send pictures of the front and back of your attachments that are in your current mats, as well as what it attaches to in the car. Once we received the pictures, we will work with our production manager to see if we have something that matches.

Option 2: You can choose to forgo mat attachments. We would like to clarify that our mats have thick rubber backing with nibs to keep the mats in place. Please see our FAQ #8 on our website https://www.cocomats.com/faqs/#08.

Please let us know how you would like to proceed.

Well, I don't have ANY fixation points for my existing carpet mats! So I'm in a bit of a quandary as to how to handle this. JonnyB showed me what looked like snap-eyelets on his mats and floor. Is this something standard that somehow was ignored on my car (during restoration not during build)?

Suggestions?

IIRC, my original rubber mats have snap to the floor.  I don't think they line up anymore, or make a good connection anymore, but I believe they were set up like that originally.

My Cocomats just set on top of the rubber mats.  If they move around, I never noticed.

I have 1970 280 SL , auto, US spec.   When I bought my COCO MATS , I chose:
"Option 2: You can choose to forgo mat attachments. We would like to clarify that our mats have thick rubber backing with nibs to keep the mats in place. Please see our FAQ #8 on our website https://www.cocomats.com/faqs/#08."
That was 2 years ago.  I have not noticed the mats shifting around with use.  BTW the mats are superb….also .have COCO MATS in 1957 190 SL and 1975 450 SL…..all fit each car extremely well and look great.

OK, I double checked everything on my car.

I have a carpet mat that is part of the original full interior carpet set; that has no means of affixing to the floor. I think that carpeted interior came from GAHH or Millers, more than 20 years ago.

I have a cheaper carpet mat(s) ON TOP of that one presently, and that has a rubber backing with little rubber teeth; however these teeth just laugh at the carpet underneath. THAT slides around a bit. It is those two mats in the front that will be removed and replaced with the CoCoMats.

If there SHOULD be some OEM snap system on the first layer of interior carpet mats, can anyone point to a source? Clearly it was never installed on mine during a restoration. Or should I just forget about it?

Search!  (Not using AI.)  Very detailed "snap thread".

There definitely were snaps on the rear corners of the original carpets. I have had Cocomats in mine for several years. They are very heavy and in my experience do not shift around.

no reason to fix (attach the cocomats or other type from cocomats.com)  They just lay in very nicely and snugly whether on early rubber mats or later carpet.  Rubber backing with nubs hold them well.  You may or may not want the heel pad (I have it).  They also make trunk and rear shelf mats.

+1 I too have Coco Mats with no attachment. Been a few years, they stay put.

My experience has been identical to John’s.  I have multiloop carpets, and the rubber nubs which protrude from the backing hold these cocomats firmly in place with absolutely no slipping.  They also remove for cleaning quite easily.  The carpets underneath do have two metal snaps which holds them in place securely.

...The carpets underneath do have two metal snaps which holds them in place securely...

...and mine DO NOT. Not only are the carpets devoid of snaps, so is the floor of the car.

This was part of my original question.

This was part of my original question.
And now you have your answer.  Isn't this a great Group?!?   ;)  Unless you strive to show your car at Amelia or Pebble, or unless your mats are sliding (nobody wants mats bunched up under their brake pedal), then I wouldn't bother with them.

Hello Michael,

I ran up against the same problem a couple of years ago. My car did have the snap bases in the floor underneath the carpet however. I purchased my carpet from GAHH 20+ years ago and the front floor mats/pieces did not have snaps. I was not aware of that at all until I looked into getting some Coco mats.

I purchased all I needed from Sailrite including the installation tool to put the snaps into the carpet and attach them to the floor. Cost was $15 Sailrite.com (http://Sailrite.com)

I had Cocomats make some floor mats for me and they did an excellent job. They fit perfectly. Because they fit properly and the mats are pretty heavy and have the rubber nubs underneath, there is absolutely no movement. Therefore IMHO you don't need any fasteners.

I have Cocomats in the front and on the rear bench, but if you have a dog, best get their opinion before fitting the one on the bench

My dog says they're a tad prickly for him, he much prefers to travel on the nicely padded back seat of my other car, or in my wife's mini.  I explained that we need to drive these classic cars to preserve them for the future, he didn't seem that interested, at which point he simply turned his back on me and went to sleep, on the towel that i had to put on top for him

As a follow-on, I did get CocoMats and I am extremely pleased with them. They are infinitely superior to the carpet mats which as many have noted slide around. The CocoMats are heavy and stay where you put them. I got the black with complimentary red accents. Overall a great purchase for the car.

Michael,

I wish i had read this post earlier.  I've had the CocoMats for a decade, and they do not budge.  the rubber backing is wonderful.  Wear is excellent.

No, I didn't get the trunk mat. I have a good, solid condition OEM mat that functions as intended. It doesn't get the "wear and tear" that the under-foot versions do.
