I recall a discussion about squared off muffler tips no longer being available. Would these fit? Just not sure if the dimensions are correct.

these are the originals

You can most certainly make the Porsche tips fit. Here are the ones off of my 280SL. They are 45mm dia, just a tad longer at 170mm and have a cut-out at the end.

The ones you're showing are Porsche 356 tips?

No, I think Mike is showing a pair of his W113 original squared tips. Showing they have the cut outs and they are 5mm longer than the Porsche tips. I only posted the link because I thought this might be a source of squared exhaust tips since it appears ours are NLA. Diameter is the same, just shorter by 5mm.
-
Nice, but only three in stock!! Hurry...........
-
I obsess over originality. I let this one go, and have lowly "rounded" tips, as at the time, there was not really any other options that I knew of.
-
Nice Find Marcus! I was at a car show once and saw a 113 with one square and one round tip. He and everybody else at the show knew nothing about it. It caught my eye having never see a square one in person. It has been so long since the rounded tips have been produced, most have no clue. Anybody know when and why they switched ends? I figure it was due to reducing manufacturing cost. Not exactly sure how the end is formed, but the rounded version has to be easier and less costly.

FYI, we do have a "parts wanted" forum.

He was curious if the Porsche parts would fit. He did not have the dimensions of the MB tips.
-
Hello all
That was a good spot Marcus
i've spoken to several exhaust manufacturers and fabricators in the UK and no one is particularly interested in making these for such a small demand
I sent this company a picture of the original MB square ended tips and they sent me some more pictures of their ones, they say they look almost identical. They look slightly more rounded to me, but they say that they're quite a square profile. They're expecting some more in shortly
I know there were a few members interested a few years ago when this subject was last discussed. i may order a pair and report further when i receive them
-
Once installed, i would dare anyone, even the most knowledgeable, blue-blazer-straw-hat-wearing gentleman, to tell the difference. 8)
-
When I posted the link there were 4 remaining. They are now out of stock. I assume someone from here purchased some? Let us know how they fit.
-
They probably show up someplace else for sale, like ebay! It cannot be a coincidence that someone here asks for a part and the same day or one later, something shows up for sale on a popular auction site.
-
Fondly remembering our old friend Fernando Castanheira, a/k/a Hauser who passed away last year. One of the last major projects he undertook was having these exhaust tips with the square edge custom fabricated for his car. His fabricator was going to try and offer a deal...but I think the whole thing passed when Hauser did.
-
I have purchased one of these tips to compare against 1 original that I have and I can say that it is to the naked eye the same, I don't think being shorter matters much you can't see that when on the car
-
Are they the same diameter exactly? If so I may see if they are getting more in stock.
-
If they are 45mm, they are the exact diameter as the ones I have.
-
I've asked about new stock, they're expecting more in about a week's time, i've also asked about any discounts they may offer and delivery to other countries, i'll update when i hear back
-
Thank you for this. Could you keep me posted if not too inconvenient? Thank you

Hello, yes of course, i'll update this post, so keep an eye out. They'll notify me when they're back in stock, so i'll buy a pair and get some pictures with them on the car
-
Great thank you!
-
This is original and Porsche
-
Have you guys ever seen this style? The bottom is cut and pushed into the tube, attempting to direct all the exhaust down. They were on my car when purchased in 2000.

Nice memory, Bob!! Thanks for the link.
-
I remember another post where the member changed his pipes for these ones after ruining his wife's trousers when she stood behind the car when he started it, i don't think he was very popular!
-
Ha! Funny. Well, the tips of these old ones are dirty, so I imagine the crimping or whatever inside the tube is best effort. Hard to make a good seal without a little weld.

RWMASTEL
I recently bought a new aftermarket exhaust system for my 1975 MB 450SL and those strang angled down tips came with the package. I elected not to install them
-
I believe that the early - 1972 107s had straight tipped exhaust ends.
I bought a pair of the fake out angled down chrome exhaust tips for 107 from the SLShop in GB but they didn't fit.
Their diameter was too small to fit over exhaust ends.
I always disliked the crude exhaust tips on 107s and that bulky barrel muffler hanging down from the rear.
But what I don't want is a louder sport exhaust.
best,
jz

Here is your chance! There is a pair of tips for sale on eBay right now at $425 for the pair plus $24 for shipping
No - 225578984920
I have no involvement in this sale, I run a standard search on eBay keeping an eye out for the tips and it showed up today.
Perhaps the seller should contact the person that just bought the tool kit on Bring a Trailer at $3200+ ::) ::) ::)

Got it.

Yes, I think they were an option/fit in the snowier (?) locations as pipes less likely to clog
-
While I started this thread with a single link to the roger bray site for these tips, I've since found a number of other 356 suppliers with the same tips. Some of these are in the US as well. Just so people aren't waiting for the one site to get them back in stock.
-
Marcus,
Do you have a link to the US suppliers?
-
Garry and all,
I bought a pair at Sierra Madre Porsche parts:
https://sierramadrecollection.com/
P/N: 547.54.110
I have NOT installed them yet.
"12 parts in stock".
I have no connection with the vendor except I am a customer.
Good luck all.
I hope to have them on for the Chicago get together.
-
Yes, sierramadrecollection is one I found.
You can also find them on Pelican Parts (https://www.pelicanparts.com/More_Info/54654101.htm?pn=546-54-101-STO&SVSVSI=4209&DID=196861). Pelican gets theirs from Stoddard but I was unable to find it on Stoddards site.
Also Klasse356, https://klasse356.com/catalog/showItems.asp?Category=EXH, go to the second to last entry. You can ask them for a picture.
And Dr911, https://dr911.ca/shop/muffler-tip-with-square-rolled-edge/.

Looks like a lot of members will be checking out Pagoda butts now.
-
So sad to think of all the effort that our late friend Hauser (Fernando) went through to re-create these locally, when an extremely reasonable substitute was available...
I suspect his efforts cost him considerably more than the $70 each price tag the Porsche parts folks are asking.
-
Yes, I remember these being mentioned on here before and I seem to recall them something to do with being fitted to cars supplied in cold snowy climets ?
No dought someone will enlighten us again !
-
Yes Bob H,
I was that man !
I fitted these deflected Tips and Dolly was a Happier Bunny
Paul
-
Must be the first time in history when a new exhaust restored marital harmony!
-
Those deflector tips were originally designed for USA cars which had the big rubber safety bumpers.
-
Does anyone else rush in to do a job without giving it much thought, i certainly do and i never seem to learn
Spent 20 minutes wrestling with the nuts that hold my old non MB exhaust tips on, with no success and a lot of hot air
Left it for a day and then realised the nuts are welded on, the only loose nut was the one holding the spanner. Just needed to loosen the grub screws, 10 seconds!
Fitted the new square ended tips, they fit very well, amply long enough, i haven't seen any originals in person, but i can't see how you could tell the difference when fitted
-
Those look great Bob. How far beyond the edge of the bumper do they extend?
-
I've left them extended about 40mm from the bumper, there's enough length to bring them out further, or push them in, if that's what you prefer
Thanks again Marcus for the lead
-
I ordered a set from Pelican Parts and received them today. They’re imported by Stoddard here in the states. They claim that these are manufactured by the same company that produced them for the 356 back in the day. If that’s true, they may have produced them for Mercedes as well? I have only one OEM squared tip and unless you examine them closely and side by side you’d be hard pressed to tell the difference, especially from what is visible once installed.
Thanks to both Marcus and BobH for letting us know about their availability! One more originality box ticked.
