Title: original chrome tail pipe trim
Post by: zak on October 04, 2022, 20:27:11
I recall reading that the original factory chrome exhaust tip end detail was a flat ring detail with 90 deg edges. All the tip ends I have seen have a rounded shaped ring at the end. I hope my description is clear.
I find nothing in the tech manual. Am I mistaken about the flat shape ?

Apparently, all 113’s were delivered with the squared off edge on the exhaust tips. I know of no source (genuine or reproduction) for them.  Only the rounded over ones are available.  It’s definitely bragging rights if your car has them.

So they were original from the factory. I have never seen a pair in the flesh.
I wonder why they go missing ?

At 51 years or older, most exhaust systems have been replaced and I would guess those old style tips discarded because they were bonded to rusty tailpipes.  I’ve seen a few but they are rare birds to say the least.  It’s a small detail but they’re something I wish I had.

Hello all, there's an exhaust fabricator in the UK who may be interested in making these square end pipes, but they need an example of a round end tailpipe to evaluate before they can advise manufacturing costs.  I've sent them the dimensions of the square end that was posted on here a while ago, but they need to see one in the flesh, and the dimensions were only for the actual square end, not the complete pipe, length, diameter etc, do they have dimples, or a cut out or anything that fixes them?

I don't have one to send them as an example, and i don't expect anyone in the UK has one spare?, if so that would be really helpful

The SL shop in the UK sell two types, assume one may be MB and the other repro.  Can anyone tell me what the length should be for the correct pipe, i can then order one and send it to them

Thanks

BobH,

I have original MB replacements with the round end. It measures 174mm total length that includes the round tip.

I have a stock of used ones (rounded rim). I'm happy to donate one to the cause.

Thanks Tony, and thank you Colin for the generous offer.  I'll find out where they want us to send it, hopefully you don't mind posting it to them?  Depending on what they do with it, it may be sacrificed and you may not get it back

I have no idea what cost they'll come back with, it may be prohibitive, the problem is i can't judge how many owners might buy them, but i think it's worth a punt.  I know if they do make them and list them on auction sites they'll probably have orders coming out of their ears

Did i see on other posts that these may fit another car, possible Porsches?  That would open up a whole new market for them

Thanks again

Bob

This exhaust tip was obviously installed on A car before. It was included in a box of stuff I got with my 280SL and all the other parts have fit the W113 although some would have also fit W111 and W108.  Inside diameter of tip is about 48-49 mm. Tailpipe OD on my MB exhaust system is about 46mm. So I can't guarantee that this is originally from a 280SL but hopefully adds to the body of knowledge. Happy to send it along but Stick is much closer and knows the pedigrees of his stock. I would be in for at least a pair if pricing is reasonable.  Lee

NOTE - SEE UPDATED DIAGRAM posted on 15 March 2020 to give more exact dimensions.

The inner/diameter of the tube and length are the same as a current MB tip.

The square edge is 4 mm long at the outside gently tapering to 3 mm at where it meets the outer diameter of the tube. I am not able to get a read of the height of the square edge. I will bring this along to our Pagodas and Beer event on the 21st to have a cross check on the dimensions.

Check out this thread. It contains more measurements and pix.  Keep us posted about this project. I’m definitely interested.

I have one original 'square' tipped end pipe. If the fabricator gets back to you and is interested and this goes somewhere they could use that as a model, but I would not want it sacrificed.

Thanks for the kind offer Ray, hopefully they can work from the pictures and dimensions i've given them, and the round tipped sample i'm going to send them.  I may "borrow" your pipe, myself if they manage to send me a prototype to compare them, but i wouldn't trust them with it

I'll be in touch when i hear more

Thanks

Hi Bob,

Did you ever get anywhere with the "square" tail pipe reproduction ?

Hello Ray, no every lead led to a dead end i'm afraid, but did you see this recent link?

https://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=36606.msg267853#msg267853

This company Roger Bray in the UK have these Porsche tips, which other members who have original square ended tips say are almost identical, apart from the length

Funnily enough they've been out of stock until today, when they had three come in, and i've now bought two from them

I'll fit them when delivered and post some pictures
