Title: Black plastic pieces for late-280SL headrests
Post by: Berggreen on August 11, 2022, 19:32:06
Hello

I need a set of plastic pieces for the head rests in a late-280SL. They will have to be black - not brown as in the picture (picture from the net).

Does anyone have a spare set they want to part with? I need 4 of them.

See picture below.

Best regards,

Christian

Wow, thanks, I looked all over for them with the European vendors of parts, but without luck.

But 120$ (plus shipping and import tax for Europe) is a lot for a set of plastic pieces. I could live with a used set for less. 😉

They are actually machined aluminum. I could not find any other option when I needed them a couple years ago.

Great, thanks. I will buy a set from this seller and have it sent to a friend in the US, where I am passing by later this year.  :)

Hi,
these blind plugs are candidates for the 3D printer. Newer "Hasenohr" headrests no longer had them.

Good point with the 3D printing!  ;)

In fact I need them because my current headrests do not have them. But I am installing some new headrest covers in leather which already have the holes made for the plastic pieces. So it may be that the plastic pieces will only be there for show, if my headrests are of the newer type and actually do not need the holes anymore.

Nope.
Christian,
Those are wrong. Those (in the advert) are the escutcheons for the sedan's seats (where the chrome pedestals pass through) - there where we have the oval ones.
The escutcheons/rosettes/grommets you are looking for were never separately available...;
i.e. you have "to part out" an existing headrest in order to get them. :o ???

The correct headrest for the Pagodas are the ones Mercedes used in contemporary cars until Apr/1972 (only the pedestals, chrome arms are slightly different). The ones thereafter look similar but are wrong (see the pics), a well trained eye can easily see the difference. ??? ::) :P

The side escutcheons  are openings for a 10 mm ratchet nut in order to gain access to the M6 (metric) spanner width 10 mm hex heads of the chrome legs/pedestals, in order to be able to tighten those.

These escutcheons are not separately available, only repros (as mentioned above, Bud's Benz, etc.)
and those were NOT available in any interior color
but only:

light grey  - for ivory or parchment interiors
light brown  - for cognac and I believe bamboo interiors, see attachment
dark brown   (I have just learned...) for brown interiors, see attachment
and dark grey - for all other interiors (blue, green, black, red, etc.)

So, if you want to go correct, you need dark grey grommets/escutcheons, nothing else.

Easiest way is to find proper headrests.

Good luck,

Achim

Oh damn, and I already spent 100 bucks on those in the EBay advert!  :'(

But thanks, I see you are right and the holes are way too small in the ones I now bought. What a disaster.  :(
