Hi folks
Just made a start on cleaning engine bay and I’m just wondering if anyone knows what ‘square hole’ is for on the bracket that holds the spark plug leads in place.
It looks like it may be for a clip, but I can’t find any cables that may be able to reach it? Perhaps the same bracket is used for other Mercs of the time and as such superfluous to the Pagoda?
I’ve looked at a lot of photos of other pagodas and all seem to show the same, ie just a square hole.
Any ideas.
Thanks
Katie

hello Katie, its for a clip that secures the power brake booster hose.
-
Perhaps on right hand drive cars this clip is not used, since the booster will be on the same side of the engine bay as the intake manifold.

Cees has hit the nail on the head.
Not used on my RHD 230sl

Ooh, you are all so clever 😁
I looked everywhere and couldn’t find the answer 😔
Glad to have the reassurance that something hasn’t fallen off!?!?!🤣

Fees is correct, it’s a clamp to hold down the vac hose from brake booster to intake manifold.

It looks like you are missing the front square hole bracket. Should be one front and back of spark plug wire bracket.

No sign of anything being broken off? There is a clip at the front, can’t remember what it holds, but not a large bracket with a ‘square’ hole?

As I look at your first photo, looks like front bracket with square hole is missing. I see small holes where bracket was attached. I think at some point in time the bracket came off. They are attached by a little spot welds in those holes.

Bob,
I think Katie has a RHD 230sl so it does not have that and bracket slot is not used.

I do, I do! 😁
Here is a picture of the other end (pre clean up) of the cable bracket thingy!

Does anyone have the part number for the clip itself?
Thanks,
Harry

Looks like MB part #001 988 2278. Available at Authentic Classics as their part #002577. $7.40 U.S. Also probably available from other sources. Lee

Katie,
Exactly the same as my RHD 230 sl

Be careful though Katie as hitting nails on the head in our cars engine bays (engine head) could cause all sorts of catastrophic problems....the folks up Garrys way certainly have some interesting fixes on our cars....
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

So, all of these engines seem different. Katie's 1964 engine has a straight bracket on the left side, (radiator side), and has a clip holding a cable, but Garry's 1965 has a bracket, but no clip, and my 1965 doesn't have a bracket or a clip
Question is, should this have a bracket and a clip to hold the cable, or was the cable rerouted after 1964?
