Title: W11x W108 250SE: Patching up Inner Fenders
Post by: Mechagon on May 18, 2022, 06:53:22
I thought I would make a thread to document some of the progress I'm making on my 1966 250SE since I haven't found a Pagoda yet.

It's a very original car that has documented service records going back to early 1968 and remarkably has absolutely zero rust in the floors, trunk, and sills. It has non-assisted steering, 4 speed standard transmission, and no AC, which are the features that drew me to it. It's also my favorite 1960s MB colour scheme.

Unfortunately it does need a new front crossmember and the right side inner fender and fender are rusty. It appears tjat someone has decided to convert it to European style headlamps by using a complete fender assembly from another car, and the paintwork was very poor, causing the fender to rust out and allow lots of moisture onto the inner fender flange.

Here I've just cut out the ruined areas to take a look at how far the rot goes. I think the outer part of the box section may need to be trimmed back farther as it looks a bit thin and wavy. I also need to experiment and find a good way to form the double flange on the inside panel, and source the correct stamped nut plates.

As a fellow (blaugrün) '66 Coupe owner, I'm looking forward to seeing your progress.
