in the early 1960s, my wife's parents had a 220 Fintail sedan that was destroyed in a head head-on collision with a runaway dump truck in the Andes.  Her mother and father both survived the head-on and that sent them off the edge of the road and down a ravine.  Bela Barenyi's crumple zones worked and they both are still with us today aged 98 and 100.  There is a photo of my wife and her little brother and sister with that car in Pagoda Style.

My understanding always was that the car was a "beemer" and the motorcycle was a "bimmer" :-\

Your understanding is reversed.  Take it from someone who bought a bimmer in 1972, a 2002 new, and drives a bimmer now.

I think it is a matter of opinion or where you live. I do not own a BMW car, but 4 BMW motorcycles and I am a member of the BMW MOA. There they all concur with my understanding... 8)
