Title: Need Mechanic Recommendations
Post by: JPMOSE on February 09, 2022, 21:29:06
Hello,

I recently moved from Atlanta to coastal Delaware and need help finding mechanics in the 100 mile radius.  My 280SE 3.5 had a lot of work performed by my friend and I over the last year.  I replaced the D-Jetronic Wire Harness; Temp and Air Sensors; spark plugs, trigger points, throttle positioning switch; points; wires; coil; ballast resistors; valve adjustment and all 8 fuel injectors were sent out for testing.  I also purchased a D-Jetronic tester off Ebay which hooks into the ECU.

After putting everything back together, the car ran very poorly!  With the D-Jetronic tester, we were able to determine that one of the fuel injectors (electronic not mechanical) was sticking open.  So I found a new one and replaced it.  This improved it greatly, but it still has a miss.   I ran out of time and ended up moving in January.  I brought the car to DE inspection and it failed the Hydrocarbon emissions.  I think the limit is 900 and mine was 1300 (but I don't have the paperwork in front of me).  I REALLY need to have someone run the car on a scope to determine which cylinder is misfiring.  We tested the spark at each cylinder and it was great...the ECU was switched with a rebuilt one and it didn't make a difference.  I suspect another fuel injector isn't up to par, but they are expensive and hard to find.

So....does anyone know a honest MB mechanic in DE or near Annapolis, DC, Baltimore or Philly?  Wilmington. DE would be more ideal.

I also need to pull one spark plug wire at a time to see if one makes little difference.  I've been so consumed with the move that I haven't attempted this yet!   Thanks for your help!

There is always Chuck Taylor in DC although that may be a bit far.

When I visit my dad in Camden, Delaware (just outside Dover) there is an independent Mercedes repair shop on Ceasar Rodney Avenue just a couple of blocks from his house called Camden-Wyoming Auto that seems to work on older Mercedes vehicles.  You might give them a ring to see if they are familiar with 280SE 3.5 fuel injection.

JP,

May want to call Precision Autoworks, Camden NJ. Well known in the MB community. Camden is on the other side of the river from Philadelphia.
Also try speaking with Tony Labella, also on the Jersey side of Philly. Tony's shop is actually in Delaware, and while all the fanfare on Pagodas goes to others, Tony quietly restores them and sells them. Perhaps he has a mechanic contact for you, surely worth a call.

Tony is a member here, look him up and make contact.

You can actually hear each electronic injector firing with a mechanics stethoscope or a long screw driver. Hold one end of the screwdriver on the injector body and place the handle in direct contact with your ear. You will hear it clicking. Check each injector to make sure it is firing. With this model, also be aware that the wiring harness for the electronic injection is routed directly under the battery?!  Remove the battery and make sure that the wiring is not damaged from acid.
