All,
I was about to fabricate or order the rear heat shield for exhaust when I recognized that according to the SLS web-side, it was discontinued in 67. Can you confirm that the 67 and later sl's don't have it and that it is not really needed?

New topic to me! I have this plate in 280SL (I think it makes a lot of sense). What I see in parts lists:
1. It is not present on any drawings
2. When you get to 113042 exhaust parts list you can find A 113 490 02 30 PROTECTIVE PLATE
LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT, which is this plate, I think.
3. It is present until chassis 042 015659 and then it is gone...
Looks like the truth what they say...

WRe, yes, saw it, I was verifying this info in the EPC.
By the way: another example of different content in German and English on SLS pages. I really need to develop a habit of always looking at SLS pages in German.

Thanks to both of you. Based on the Niemoeller info, mine did not have one.
Looking at the prices, especially the home made one from Buds Benz, for a plain piece of bend sheet metal, I will stay original at that point.

My early 230 from 03/64 has it. I fabricated a new one. See pic for dimensions if you wat to make one yourself.

Nice! Thanks for posting those dimensions Sead, it looks fairly easy to make (so long as you have a bead roller and a rivet tool that is) but you do need those dimensions, so thanks for that.

These reproductions do not quite correspond to the original form. Vertical side is getting narrower toward back plus a pice at the front must be cut off. See my part. But that can be done at your own...

Whichever quality version is chosen, and whatever year the car, I can highly recommend using some kind of rear exhaust heat shield, especially for those living in hot climates. That shield deflects a lot of heat away from the fuel tank. After some exhaust work mistakenly omitted the shields many years ago (thanks dad :-), I do well remember frequent fuel odors from an overheated tank's vapor pressurizing past the filler cap, especially when sitting with no airflow just after a drive on a hot summer day with a full tank. Fuel can expand 2-3% from a cool morning to a 115F desert afternoon, more when you add in the exhaust heat next door. Maybe most cars lived in nice climates and Mercedes cost-cutters thought they could delete that shield at some point, but if you ever notice the odors and you know the cap and fuel lines are good, then this shield might help. Another way to tell is from the paint around the filler that can eventually become cloudy and brittle after repeated fuel vapor exposure. Adding the shield back is fairly easy and didn't require removing the whole exhaust, just removing rear mountings and pulling it down enough to slide in. Hope that helps someone. Best regards, Mark

We were making the center heat shield a few years ago but didn't get a lot of interest at the time. Still have the buck to make them from .050'' aluminum. These are exact copies of the original.
