Title: Injection pump - good vibes
Post by: MarkCan on October 16, 2021, 14:55:11
Few days in to it and I am smiling. Still no guarantee but definitely a healthy swing on to the positive side. Pump is now silky smooth. Take a look.

Hi Mark,

Nice work. Out of curiosity, where did you pour the ATF in and out of? The top of the pump? The side?

Thanks,

Meyer

Every port or connection that was available. All the fuel ports were closed for the purpose of oil flush. So not to contaminate. With the rack plate removed as well as the BC, TC and the dipstick you can have the oil flowing any way you like. I first put the generous amount through the BC hole and and the rack area. Turn the shaft by hand, leave it alone for an hour or so than drain it trough the dipstick. I repeated it few times. Once I could see the oil to no longer bring out dirt and sludge I introduced transmission fluid in about 50/50 mix with the oil. That did the trick over several days. Satisfied with the main chamber cleanliness I moved on to the rack area. With the pump tilted at around 45deg. oil will flow out of the cylinder lubrication channels. Rotating the main shaft may free up some build up from around the springs. I found the outer most cylinder channel to be the dirtiest. It took close to a quart of oil flowing to see the completely clean stuff coming out. Mind you, my pump was sitting for long time unused and I want to take all the steps necessary to lower the possibility of failure.

Here is some footage from yesterday: Check valve service. Yes if you can change your oil you can service this valve.

Dear Mark,

With a smile I'm looking at your videos.

I myself am also about to start a restoration project on a old R11 pump.

A brief question for new (I know more will follow once I start), but where do you get the spare parts?

I know e.g. the "SLS shops and MB shops" have seals etc. But if I need more detailed components, where should I look.

Curious for your answer.

Best,

Bart

Bart,
Looking for parts is the hardest and most time consuming task.
I continuously search and ask everyone I know.
There are less and less old school specialists that care and are willing to help. We need to treat them with great respect and try to absorb all knowledge presented.

With regards to the injection pump you may want to visit some local commercial diesel shops. Provided you find an enthusiastic technician, he can cross reference some parts for you. Take a look here for example;

Diesel pump UK is definitely well equipped. Knowledge and enthusiasm comes by a truck load. Give it a shot.

Robert Fairchild at Fairchild Industries in Shingletown California has parts for the R11 pump. I had a seized rack on my pump (seized in the full fuel position). He freed up the rack, and replaced all seals, gaskets, etc. He also calibrated it as he still has the Bosch bench from the 1960's. It is like new.

Go to info@fuelinjectioncenter.com for his contact info.

Robert Fairchild is the real deal. He came highly recommended.
He rebuilt a pump for me using a space cam from an earlier pump and calibrated it. One thing he mentioned was that because of ethanol fuel he was calibrating most pumps on the rich side. But I run almost exclusively ethanol free gas so he put it right in the middle. You have to be patient with Robert because his services are in great demand. I waited six months.
I've heard some vintage Porsche racing guys are paying him for custom space cam mods on their Bosch MFI pumps. He's that good.
And a nice guy too.

The FI pump is a magnificent piece of machinery. I know enough about it to be dangerous but am interested in learning more. Can someone explain what the space cam is, what its function is and why a space cam from an earlier pump is advantageous. Thanks in advance.   Lee

You are a Full member. Have you gone through the material in Technical Manual about Fuel Injection?

Here is also some info, enclosed.

Thanks Pawell for the very informative attachment.

Now I'm even more dangerous. Fortunately my project car came with a rebuild FI pump so all I did was time it correctly to the crankshaft and install it. I must have done something right since when I started it for the first time in late October it idles and accelerates very nicely, and continues to do so.

As a result I haven't had to diagnose any of the typical problems associated with the FI pump or at least its peripherals. I had not heard of the space cam previously but your article provides a great introduction. Many thanks!  Lee

Here is the latest on my injection pump.
I had to open it again, so I took a short video. Full range fuel flow adjustment.

While at at I have noticed some interesting stuff about the barometric compensator as well.
