Title: Looking for 1970 280SL body parts
Post by: CJHenderson on September 05, 2021, 13:06:37
Looking for 1970 280SL body parts. Need trunk lid and both left and right doors. My car has waves and some dents that most likely will be a nightmare to make it look good.

Quite a few items on ebay. May not be what you want to pay for it.

I was there and the photos that they had posted doesn't show all that well. If I'm going to part with my money then I need to see an eye level view of the skin itself. Getting waves or dents of any kind on aluminum is the same issue that I'm facing now.

When I sell something, potential buyers many times ask me for additional pictures. Common on ebay.

The doors and trunk lid are built oversize and filed to fit the openings.  You may be opening up more work if the "New" doors are smaller than the old ones.  I went through the exact same thought process but elected to have mine fixed.  My hood, trunk lid and doors were pummeled with all manner of parking lot damage as well as a previous owners slamming the trunk and hood so hard they dented the panels.  I stripped the paint and epoxy coated them then sent them off to be painted.  I think it was about $4000 including the tonneau and cowl scoop.  It was an "ouch" but at the end of the day I think it was the right thing to do.

One of our members showed restoration pictures last year where he had significant waves, nut just dents in his hood and he was able to have the metal straightened for the most part.

how bad are your panels?

A good body shop ("panel beater") can probably fix your current pieces. I was amazed at what I, a complete and utter novice, was able to do on a really, really bad dent in my VW 411 passenger door, it's now invisible. Took me a few hours but the result I found amazing. Just think what an experienced, trained person is able to do. Maybe just take it to one or two places and ask their opinion + estimate?

Thanks for your post. You just helped to make up my mine of what to do. I'm staying with what I have.
