Title: Funny "topcover" on my transmission box

All,

"It fits but it doesn't ..."

I just spend the morning cleaning my transmission and I noticed that the top doesn't seem original ...

Pls have a look at the photo.

Who can explain what is going on?

Looks like mine.  Bear in mind that there are two different top covers, one for the top loader (yours and mine) and a different one for the side shifter that came with cars that had column shift. Since I don't have a side shifter I don't know if the profile of the top cover is different. I don't think you have a problem, at least with the top cover appearing to not fit.

It looks like any other top loader transmission that I've seen. Why do you think something's wrong?

Because the hole on the corner doesn't make sense.

Why not cover the entire edge?

Note same "mismatch" on 300 SL transmission. Case was designed to accept several different covers depending upon application.

I think what you are looking at is a dowel pin hole. In order to machine the raw casting correctly that would have been where the case was located on the fixture for final machining.

Raw casting

Face the top of the case and drill dowel holes.

Flip case and install on fixture.

Face front and back and bore bearing bosses. 

Once the top is milled and the dowel holes are drilled every other operation keys off that height and location.
