Title: Trunk Star Gasket?
Post by: revrevrev on July 03, 2021, 20:02:51
Hiya-
We're replacing the trunk star on the 1964 230sl - was there a rubber gasket that went between the paint and the star? Where does one acquire such a thing?

The MB parts list shows a small rubber ring that goes on the threaded stud of the star. P/N 110 987 0741. No idea where to get it. I would assume the usual suspects.

At Mercedes dealer, they are available, cost pennies. While at it, you may want to get the seals for type designation as well. It is quite important to seal it well or otherwise you would be puzzled where has this water in the trunk come from? Similarly with type designations.

PN for type designation seals A 115 987 03 41, may be with 64 added at the end. Do not remember how many you need... they are available as well. For this you may also need locks A 000 994 27 45.

You can also easily fabricate the seals - a couple of hole punches and a piece of rubber.

Pawell, Isn't the type designation below the gasket surface?  I seem to recall it was really low on the lid and only the European "Automatic" badge needed seals.

I went to the car and needed to modify the post a bit.

Shvegel, I do not know how to read parts list exactly, it says 2pcs needed for manual and 3 pcs needed for automatic cars. I read it, actually - 2 pcs needed for type designation and 3 pcs needed for automatic badge on top of the 2pcs. I may be wrong.

In any case - automatic badge is below the type designation on the lid.

Water getting in through pin holes in the lid both for automatic badge and type designation will most likely not drop into the trunk directly. From the type designation it will go to the lid edge re-enforcement frame. Will eventually drop through openings there or while opening the trunk lid, I think. From the automatic badge it drops on the trunk edge somewhere (I do not think it is below the gasket). Therefore I just sealed all the pins and their holes of both badges.

On any similar part application, I have always added a dab of silicone sealant. Helps a lot to seal and is easily removed if needed.
