Any idea what option code 654 on a original 230sl data card is for?
-
Just received a response from Mercedes-Benz Classic Center advising that it is:
654 - Phoenix Tires
-
The two tires originally designed and supplied for the Pagoda were the Firestone Phoenix and the Continental RA60.

Is this for the US, as I thought in Europe it was Michelin tyres though heard UK was Dunlop.
Happy to be told I’m wrong 😁

What I said is noted in early history. How long actual production of the RA60 and Phoenix went on, don’t know…

I bought a new R107 in 1973 and it came equipped with VR rated Dunlop tires, 205/70VR14. I think Michael is spot on that stateside it was either Firestone Phoenix or Continental for w113… I believe both tires were HR rated. My dads car (w113) was shipped with Conti’s in late 70 to the selling dealer.

I have Continental written specifically on the data card, German delivery, March 70, if it matters.

Hi,
mine came with Phönix in Jan. 1971 in Germany.
...WRe
-
Exactly the same as mine in December 1970. The data card does not show entry in field 65, but "Phôn." in field 19, Bereifung 5-fach, like WRe's

I wish my OEM data card was nearly as clear as others, but in the same spot as MikeSimon and other present in section 19, mine says "er"
January 1969 production, delivery April 1969 to NY.
What I have is a very distorted copy of a microfiche as supplied by the Classic Center...
-
mine isn't very clear either, Apr 64 production, delivered May 19th 1964
-
To add to the discussion: My Data Card indicates for a May 17 1965 delivery (Cologne) in Box 20 Bereifung 5-fach: "185.14Phon."
My Zertifikat provided by the Classic Center in 2003 does not list 654 under "Options"

Is it 654, or perhaps 645?? Who supplied the data card to you?
Code 654 came much later for "AMG light alloy rims 5-hole 4 pieces"

My data card, German delivery, March 1970.

Mine, US delivery (I believe the car was delivered and spent the first 40-odd years of its life in California, but I don’t know what the dealer code means and have no proof), very late 1968 or early 1969. Dunlop white wall tires. The spare tire in the car is a Michelin white wall (very old).

"er" maybe "whatever"? ;) ;)

:D

François: According to the VIN-number, your 280SL should be a November 1968 built.

No. er.

My original data card from the factory has “-s” in block 19. My car was delivered in February 1969 with Phoenix white walls. My data card shows code 641 (white wall radial tires).
