Title: Headlight drain
Post by: afibbe on May 04, 2021, 20:12:58
I purchased these thinking they went in the area behind the headlights .  I don’t have an existing hole that will fit this part.  Thoughts?

I have two of these in the grommet kit for the firewall. (Not installed yet)

I would have thought you are referring to No. 24 on this picture. The German description says it is in the trunk, 1 hole.

If we know where it goes, I would add it to the drain holes description in Tech Manual. I do not remember it in my car.

Typical 10mm plug is A 110 987 00 39 now replaced by A 000 997 33 20. As per parts list seals box sections above the toe board. Different shape than the SLS suggest (maybe the replaced one was this shape).

There is also another plug used in several places, bigger, 20mm, including 1pcs in rear floor and headlights, as per parts list, used to be A 111 987 12 15, but was replaced with A 000 987 18 40 - a bigger plug that goes to more many places of the car. But it is a different shape, I think. again, maybe the replaced one was the shape shown.

Pawel, you are right. Is in the trunk grommet set. I have that one too, should have checked.

Any idea where it goes?

I have only the A 000 987 18 40 (those flat ones on the picture) in the trunk.

Those specifically fit the trunk spare tire well on a 108 or similar sedans drain hole.  I had them in a 280SE 4.5.

For this place (spare wheel well) in W113 I see:

A 000 997 33 20 CAP IN DER RESEVERADMULDE; 10 MM; Up to ident. no.: 042 007204 ALSO INSTALLED ON 007216, 007232 EXCEPT FOR: 006069

The above part number replaced A 110 987 00 39, as I wrote before.

If you look at SLS’ schematics, this grommet is supposed to be fitted on the left hand side of the trunk, more or less where the inside of the trunk wall gets a little bit narrower for the wheel well. I ordered one, but I’m still not sure where to fit it exactly, so it has been waiting for a few months until I got the time to bother somebody on the forum about it   ;D

Happy to try to figure it out!

I do not have this schematic. I cannot find it on SLS site. If it is there, please kindly post a link.

Diameter of the grommet would help as well.

There are single grommets in the parts list that go to the trunk, but a different shape. Unless the shape shown by SLS was of the part that was replaced with the current one.

It is on page 75.b (Boot/Trunk lid and equipment), item number 67.

As you noted many times, both SLS and Niemoller (at least, maybe others too) provide rather detailed and helpful schematics, with complementary information (one pretty good photos and descriptions, the other MB part numbers). The problem is classification of some of the items. In this case, you could search’rubber’ or ‘grommets’, trunk equipment, etc.

I am suspecting that the grommet may be for in early 230sl  with with the deep wheel well. I cant find any suitable place in the SL trunck. As Brad said and I checked, my 108 has a hole for that kind of grommet in the bottom of the well.
(Grommet long gone but may get one soon.)

I think that is what it is - a drain for spare wheel well in early 230sl. The part used back in the day looked like the one on the picture in post #1. It had the part number I quoted earlier, then it was replaced.

I think the shape of the collar of this grommet suggests it fitted the place where two metal sheets met and were welded (just my supposition).

I do not see any other place for it there. I have two holes in the trunk floor there, but it is only because I had this floor replaced with a new MB panel that had holes for the new evaporation system hoses. The third hole is in the frame under the mounting of the shock absorber. None of these are drain holes and can be plugged with the 20mm plug with part number I quoted before.

now back to the HEADLIGHT drain.

I have rubber drains on the headlight buckets.  I did not want to remove my lights for the photo so here is a photo of a pristine example from motoring investment -- I added the blue arrow and notes.   My rubber drain is in the same hole as this photo.

Oz,
I have that one too. But I believe it is a lot smaller than the grommet shown in the first pic.

Thank you all for the help. I am now sure that the picture I provided has nothing to do with the headlights.

I still have the issue of the drain for the headlights.  I know I need one because there was something rubber at the bottom of the headlight bucket but it fell apart when I tried to remove it (like most of the rubber on this car).  Can anyone point me in a direction to find the rubber drain part?
