Looks like there should be a strip of chrome or rubber here at the top of the door to cover the paint.
Is this also the way it's finished on the leather trim side?

You made me curious so I had to run out and look at my '68 280SE coupe. I have the door panels off at the moment and have examined this area. I don't remember seeing the body paint as yours shows.
On mine, the outer "cat whisker" fuzzy window seal is mounted higher than yours. It is just below the exterior door chrome strip. It is held in with tiny screws and not clips. In fact, all of the fuzzy seal strips on this car are held in with screws front and back. I have replaced the rear ones but not the fronts. The outer seal strip is about a 1/4" higher than the inner strip. The inner strip is mounted on a metal rail that is attached to the top of the door frame. I can try to take pictures tomorrow.
Concerning the door panel cap, the leather just wraps around the form and all you see is the leather. BTW, Is that leather on yours? It has a much deeper texture and more like MB-Tex. Looks nice.

I'll see whether I can mount the strip any higher. I'm changing the lock when a part arrives so I'll have the trim off soon.
It's the leather I just put on. I'm pretty happy with the results.

Here are my pics. As I mentioned, the outers are simply screwed to the door frame. The back seals were a similar orientation in that the outer was higher than the inner.
Are your strips screwed to the door frame? If so I assume the holes were already there and you just mounted in the same spot? Shouldn't be hard to move it up some to reduce the amount of paint showing.
