Hi Guys,
Please confirm the steel wheels rims on the 190SL and Pagodas should be black.
Thanks
Chris

Can't speak for 190's, but for 230 and 250 SLs, which have two-piece wheel trim in the form of center caps and trim rings, the steel wheels are painted body color.

See attached

For the 190 SL - check with 190SLgroup.com they should have the information you are looking for.

The 300SL models had their wheels painted the same as the body color. Not certain if the roadster models used the color of the hardtop if different than the body. I would guess the 190’s would have been treated in the same manner. I believe when the w113’s switched to full hubcaps, that’s when all wheels were painted black.

Here is a set of 190SL wheels I just did a few weeks ago. 190SL are body color on the outside (my car is white) and dark green on the inside. The outside body color is full gloss, and the dark green is a primer/matte finish.

190SL is always body color. Inside of the rim is probably army surplus green.

Chris,
Wheels for my Pagoda - 280SL (007749) including spare, are black, not body color. I believe the wheel color changed to black when the full wheel covers were initiated.
-
There is a comprehensive study and manual for colours used on 190sl.
As for wheels I have:
- rims outside is body colour
- rims inside is black or dark green
- cups inside DB158
- cups outside is hard top colour
Hub cup change in Pagoda and start of black rims happened at 113044 0 00045 as far as I can see in parts list.

It's simple:
If you have two-piece wheel trims then your wheels should be body coloured.
If you have one piece wheel trims then your wheels should be black.
-
Not certain if the roadster models used the color of the hardtop if different than the body.
300 SL Roadster wheels were painted body color or, if specially ordered, fully chromed.

Updating my previous post, the outside of my rims are painted body color (408 Havana Brown) and the inside of the rims are all painted black. So it may be safe to say that the wheels come to the assembly plant from the supplier painted black, and the factory painted the outside of the rims to match the body color of the car to which they would be mated during the era when two-piece wheel trim was the norm. Once the one piece full wheel cover was adopted, it was no longer necessary to perform this step, which cost saving likely made the bean-counters very happy indeed!

Thank you Gents,
Much appreciated.
Take care.
