Has anyone seen a DIY method of dry ice blasting? They want a lot of money to do this...but it is addicting to watch

I don't get it though. It cleans the underside. Once you resume driving, it will get dirty again. Nothing all that wrong about a not-very-clean underside?

The cost of a dry ice machine is also ridiculous. MRSP for a Karcher machine was over 15K EUR.

I use bags of dry ice to freeze sound deadening felt so it can be easily removed by tapping with a rubber mallet.

The actual machine is only one component needed for a complete vehicle set-up. Everything you need to dry ice blast a vehicle will cost about $100k usd. Shops will charge $250-300 /hour to blast your vehicle, expect to spend a few grand total getting it done.
Another alternative you can do is steam cleaning.

I had some dry ice blasting done on my car to remove tar undercoating in 2016, costing $538/hr. To be fair that price did include some displacement on their part, to bring their equipment to a location where the blasting could be done.

The benefit to dry ice blasting is there's nothing left from the blasting medium.

Does it clean as completely and thoroughly as shown in the video loaded by GM? Local environmental laws preclude hot steaming cleaning of engines and undercarriages because of hazardous waste products. Although expensive, I’d do it in a heartbeat were this service offered in my area.

Tom Colitt some years ago had some dry ice cleaning done on the underside of a Pagoda to show what the original paint colour was. He had it done in LA but dont know where. I believe it can also take off a minor layer of paint.

Hi,
some years ago I had cleaned my front axle because of all this grease and dirt of 50 years. It was done by a company specialized on dry ice cleaning but not for classic cars especially.
Yes, it cleaned everything but:
- it needs a lot if time and ice because the cleaning spots are small
- everything around is full of grease and dirt
- what I recognized later was a lot of grease in the engine compartment and around because of grease flying around
After some years a lot of grease and dirt is around the front axle again.

I hired a vendor that did mostly commercial work
Re: Dry ice blasting/cleaning naval jobs. was very dissatisfied.technique was inadequate. had to. do over with hand removal of paint and very stubborn under coat.
