Title: 1970 280SL Rear View Mirror (Mirror Glass Only or Full Kit)
Post by: MS616 on April 15, 2021, 02:59:43
Hello Friends,

I have a 1970 Mercedes Benz 280SL and I’m in need of a New Mirror Glass that goes inside the Rear View Mirror. The Housing is in an excellent shape fortunately.

If the Mirror Glass Only option is not available, I’ll consider your full Rear View Mirror in full.

Looking for excellent quality glass please.

Thanks,

If you cannot find original one and you have the old one, try a glass shop to cut it for you.

Assuming you mean Interior mirror and not exterior side view mirror.

It would be helpful to know how you replace “only the glass” in the interior rear view mirror for a later car like a 1970.  Please post how you do this as it will help others. I know that early chrome interior mirrors glass is replaceable but not sure how to replace glass in later pagodas.

Looking at the design, you are right, I don’t think the glass can come out.

The cheapest new replacement I have been able to find comes from Porsche autos of the era. The plastic mirror head with the glass is the same but you will need to swap out the base/mount with your original. Heating the socket of the new head with a heat gun will aid in getting it to snap in without breaking anything.

Yes, MB sedans of the era used the same mirror except the stem was a little longer. The main body of the mirror has a socket which pops onto the mirror stem ball. Unfortunately the plastic becomes brittle with age and may break or crack the plastic socket during the procedure. As Tyler posted, a heat gun may make the plastic pliable enough to perform the task. Mercedes W115, W114, W108 and W109 sedans of the era (1968-1973) used this mirror.

Hi there
I have this one, glass is not perfect around the edges but the rubber does cover most of it.
If you get one cut remember the mirror is about 1/4" at the top and about 1/8" at the bottom thus may require a wedge.
Let me know if interested.
Cheers
