Hi all
Any chance anyone may have this piece laying around from broken indicator stalk from one of our cars please ? I am not bothered if its broken. I am after the piece where the chrome stalk arm goes through so I can cut piece off from it.

i can't make out what that piece is
the stalks are different. but that componanpart may be the same

Yours doesn't fit the Pagoda.
The 220 SE was (at least construction-wise in a timely manner) built before the Pagoda...,
and as such does not have a multi-function switch. Its turnsignal switch has only the functions turnsignals, highbeam flasher and maybe washer pump...
... but no wiper on/off/speed selection.
The Pagoda W113 was the first Mercedes passenger car back in March 1963 which got this multi-function. ;)
And then the 600 W100 in Autumn 1963... ;)
Those were the first.
When the W108/109 250S/SE/300SE were introduced in Aug. 1965
those cars also received a multi function switch - very similar to the one of the 230 SL.
But - and there is always a but - the indicator switch of the W108 (and W111C ; i.e. 250 SEC/300SEC) was made by
Kostal in Lüdenscheid and no longer by VDO in Frankfurt as was the one for the Pagoda. :o
To make a short story long,
both types of multi-function switches are very related to each other but from different suppliers
and were manufactured completely differently,
so that you cannot exchange parts among them. :P :-X
You can .... but it isn't intended to do so.
Pretty much in the same way as you cannot exchange door lock systems made by YMOS versus HUF.
If you are very 'handy' you can always "make" something out of "something"
but in this case it will result in a chimera - often with questionalbe success.
Unfortunately Dene's column switch part looks to me like not belonging to the Pagoda handle
but sadly something else. :'( :'(
It is annoying..., since this inner handle part (the one attached to the chrome tube-like arm) is nowhere available as a spare part and is the bottleneck to repairing a broken switch unit.

You are quite correct my picture is showing is incorrect for pagoda. Was just using it as example to give to sort of idea what I was looking. Anyway I have been very lucky and now all sorted.

That's clearly a 280 SL (& 250 SL late) turnsignal switch, pats no. A002 545 2924.
Don't break it, it's valuable - keep it, repair it!

I thought VDO only did the early version?
Anyways I managed to get an original 1964 that is complete. So that is my car sorted, but while I was looking I ended up getting the one above.
So now I have a complete 1 for my car, and a the makings of another.

Yes, both Pagoda turnsignal switches were built by VDO.
They are technically identical,
only differences are:
- chrome arm
- large bakelite versus smaller plastic 12-pin plug
- indicator handle has inscriptions on the 280 switch
- wiring loom is shorter on the 280 switch
(- black-white-blue wire in 230 switch is red-white-blue in 280 switch).
Everything else is identical...,
one can serve for the other as spare part donor and vice versa - at least theoretically.

hopefully someone will respond to a new post on this old thread
the plastic that goes over the chrome stalk on my 66 230sl is cracked eventually the whole end will break off.
could i take parts from a w114 to repair mine?
unfortunately the pin the secures the outer part of the switch is deep inside the outer part and i cannot remove it to inspect the inner plastic... (i have the oldtimer replacement outer case)

Sorry to hear that.
Sorry no, no exchange possible. W113 column switches are unique to the Pagoda. 230 early and 280 late switches.
Most parts are interchangeable between these both, but not all.
Please read also my above posts. That explains everything.
