Title: Need help to ID unknown part for Hardtop
Post by: brucenator on October 27, 2020, 20:13:07
I have tried to identify the attached parts that came off the hardtop by the body shop but is not shown on any of the hardtop parts diagrams I have found. They were found under the headliner when it was replaced.

I also am having a problem getting the top to make 100% contact to the body at the rear seal area. Has anybody else had this problem?

All help is very appreciated.

Thanks.

Bruce

They're for the upright 1/4 glass frame. Another piece with similar curvature goes over them and that piece takes the door aperture seal.

What exaclty does not fit? Hard top stays too high over chassis?

Yes, to the chassis. There is approximately a 10 mm even gap across the back. Is this the normal space? Also I have yet to install the case cover gasket and was wondering if that will close up the gap some?

Not sure which case cover gasket you mean...

There is a glued seal that goes around back of the hard top underneath it - it does close the gap to a degree.

10mm to me seems a bit too much, but you can read the posts on this forum that this gap is substantial. I initially had similar gap. But:
- I made sure that the plastic cones on rear fitting points go in all the way into the openings in the chrome pillar cover so that the rubber washer rests against the chrome
- I assembled the rear latches wrongly, looking at the wrong picture. I fitted the nuts under the metal plate through which the handle pivot goes. Maybe you made the same mistake.

Otherwise just check if it settled evrywhere as it should.

The shop guy found only one installed on the right side under the exterior chrome trim but on the left/drivers side.  I read about a shim in the Technical Manual in the Hardtop instructions and I think it may be the shim for a proper seal with door window. The lip on this part is only 5 mm high See photo below for side picture of my window as the chrome trim has a higher lip and has rounded corners.

See the pic below for the case cover weatherstrip seal. It is item# 7 in the diagram.

I see what you mean on the handles. i have one that will not seat all the way and will need to work on that. They are assembled correctly so it may just need some lube to get the handle to go all the way. it stops a little short. The one side is now about a 5 mm gap.

Thanks.

This seal will not affect hard top in any way. It is for soft top compartment.

The seal that goes on hard top bottom is this one:

It is best to buy rubber at Mercedes dealers, but this hard top seal costs there EUR 1000 (!). I bought it from SLS.
