Title: Locking Fuel cap.
Post by: Paul99 on June 22, 2020, 11:56:19
My 230 came with just a modern fuel/gas cap. I was looking for a nice locking cap but the genuine Mercedes ones are very expensive.  I did find this one which is a locking cap and looks very similar to the mercedes cap. Obviously not the real thing but the price looked very attractive! Fitted it, works perfectly.

So might be of interest to other owners. (I dont have any association with the seller)

So total cost including shipping and TAX was £8.50p  ($10)

Paul, looks good. I have the modern cap too and would love to change.
But I do not want to have to use the key to unlock.
Does the cap twist on without locking or must you lock it with the key ?
thanks,

jz

The factory locking gas cap locks with the key after you have it in the full-on position. Once the cap is locked it will simply spin in a circle until it's unlocked.

I have one of these on order from the ebay vendor based upon Paul's experience. I have an OEM cap with the Mercedes logo in black plastic, so thought it worth the small outlay to get a stainless steel cap whilst retaining the original in store. Certainly looks the part.
I noticed that the vendor supplies both lockable versions and non-lockable versions. If you search for 'mercedes pagode fuel cap' it will show both versions for, I think, the same price

yes mine was great value.  It is the locking one and yes the key needs to remain in the cap when unlocked - saves you forgetting the cap at least as your keys are in it!

Not sure what the non locking one is like, but mine seems a nice addition..

I ordered one of these gas caps from ebay.  It's not an original part but for the money, an acceptable substitute while I spend the big bucks on other parts of my pagoda.

I just bought one.  I am thinking of using it as an “everyday” cap.  Having read a couple stories about gas caps falling off I think the $650 original might just hang out on a shelf for club days and shows.

What gets me is that many high priced pagodas have the cheap $10 gas cap. Check out a white 280sl on ebay for $165k with the $10 gas cap. I like originality myself.

I have an original locking gas cap on my 280SL and would like to buy a simple twist on cap since I never leave my car out overnight or even unattended in a parking lot. Where can I purchase one that fits well, not necessarily a M-B one. The original one can be a real PITA sometimes to get off/on.

I had the standard mercedes twist on cap before I changed to the locking one.  Its a modern cap from Mercedes, seems to fits just about all the modern cars as well. Easy to get from any Mercedes garage.  Just ask for the "standard" cap. EG its the exact same one on my wife's SLK.
