Title: Budget for full leather and carpet
Post by: Leester on May 29, 2020, 15:10:37
Hello all,

My 1970 280SL has just been painted (Signal Red) and it looks great. The car (shell at this point) is about 2 1/2 hours away and I can either bring it home and begin installing everything to get it running or the guys who painted it have suggested a trim shop near them if I want to do that first.

I had pretty much decided to use Heritage until the paint guys suggested the trim shop near them. I hadn't really given the interior much thought since I saw that as a later step until now. I know there are numerous variables (not sure I know all of them) but can anyone give me an idea of what I should budget for from a trim shop for leather and separately for carpet and if anyone has recently used Heritage, what I can expect to pay there for the leather and separately for carpet. With respect to the leather, yes, everything that was covered needs to be re-done.

And, if there are other alternatives, please educate me.

Many thanks

I've always used GAHH. Their pricing is as follows....

Seat kit $1,676
Leather material for dash and kick panels $300
Covers for doors, armrests and quarter panels $807
Door panel boards $107  x2
Convertible top lid cover $214
Multiloop carpet kit $902
Foam seat pads (their replacement for horse hair) $310 x 4
Headrest pads $132 x2

Total material cost $6,424 + shipping
Labor to install I estimate brings the job to $12-15k.

Thanks to Vander and WRE, very helpful.

For Benz280, my cost for painting was about $8,500. I had paint offers as high as $25,000 and low as $5,000. The paint is base coat clear coat. Car was in primer but engine compartment, dash, door jams and underside of hood had already been painted red and the soft top box, underside of trunk lid, inside of trunk had already been painted flat/semi-gloss black. Before painting some tweaking of the hood was needed, and there were 8 or 10 spots on the body that needed attention. The cost also included painting the hard top which I had already stripped of chrome and headliner. The hardtop also had a few minor dents and some rust that were corrected prior to painting.

The shop I chose is near where my son lives in the Shenandoah Valley and he knows car guys who recommended them. Hope you find this helpful.

I am in the process of doing the same. My quote from Heritage for complete leather, their better quality foam pads kick and door panes and about $500 extra for the kinder seat was about $8,000. I don't know how much shipping is though. A local upholstery shop quoted me $7,500 for the same. The local shop does not buy a kit from GAHH or the others as they can't guarantee the quality of a kit you buy, plus my guess is that it would be much more expensive that way. I priced GAHH directly from GAHH, K&K and Buds and Buds was the least expensive, however it was still just a couple thousand less than a complete installed package from Heritage.

What I don't have a good handle on yet is the different quality leathers that were discussed in a previous thread. Its hard to get my arms around that without seeing the different leathers in person.

Keep in mind when I say installed above I mean just installed/wrapped around the different components of the interior. The don't install them back in the car for that price. I am doing that myself.

GAHH supplied the leather, carpeting and top for my W111 Cab and I was very happy with the quality of the materials and the fit of the kits.  The key is the person(s) who install the kits.  To do it right, this is not a job for just anyone.  My trimmer is in Canada near Windsor and has done Pebble Beach Winners.  Whomever you pick in the end, remember that you usually get what you pay for.  Quality work takes time.

If you are shopping for upholstery services locally consider https://www.limsau.com/.  Mr. Lim has retired but the shop has been quite capable for years and quality of the work is good.  They reupholstered interior, convertible top and hardtop on my '91 BMW M-Tech 325ic.  Very satisfied.  They're looking at my 230sl seats now.

I used Heritage and it cost me about $8,500.

I would not use them again though!

Matt, I have heard good things about Lims from others and will give them a call when I'm ready for that phase.  Thanks to everyone for your help.
