Title: Carpet Padding Pattern
Post by: Pastarnac on February 20, 2020, 23:49:36
Does anybody has drawings or pictures of the padding under the carpet for a 280SL?

From my research I found that it should be jute 3/8 to 1/2 thick.

When I got the car it had 4 foam pieces ( 2 back + 2 front) which I assume it was mimicking the original padding but that is a stretched assumption.

Appreciate input from those that are knowledgeable in the topic.

This is original. The thickness is some 7mm, can be compressed slightly.

Any idea where to buy the original style padding?

This felt padding shows to still be available from Mercedes.  Part number 000-983-22-92.  It's stupid expensive though.  It wholesales for $170 and retail price is $232.  You get one square meter each.  I have no idea if what is still available has the waffle pattern to it or if it's smooth.

I see that similar padding can be bought online fairly cheaply but not with the waffle pattern. I still have my worn originals to check if they have the pattern.

I got a foil backed jute to assist with the heat on the passenger side.

On the earlier cars with rubber mats instead of carpet, was the same jute material used?

I got a foil backed jute to assist with the heat on the passenger side.

I first installed the foil backed heavy rubber material for sound deadening which I will spray with black sound deadening to make it not so obvious. I plan on using a jute backed padding next if I can find something reasonable.

After putting the deadening onto the floors in my car i the took the new floor carpet pieces and made patters and used them to cut out backed felt pads to fit under the carpet.I then got the black bitumen spray and sprayed what was to be the down side so that any moisture would not get into the pad and then contact cemented the pad to the underside of the carpet floor pieces. It worked a treat.

Looks terrific, but if your car listed is correct, shouldn't it only be a rubber mat in the wheel well?
