Title: 280SL automatic complete restoration
Post by: mbebrim on October 29, 2019, 22:44:36
In October we started new complete restoration project. Mercedes Benz 280SL w113 from 1969. Originally was sold in 1969 26th of September in Canada. The car was midnight blue body and metal roof and parchment color upholstery with blue carpets also softop was in dark blue color. All numbers are matching according with it`s Data Card. It is standart US version car with automatic transmission. Only exception from traditional factory standart is Frigiking air condition.
The first owner of the car was from London Ontario Canada and also all next four owners came from the same area. In total the car had five previous owners and they all are known.
If fate will be favorable to us then we will finish the restoration till the end of the next year.
The full photo gallery of this restoration you could watch in our homepage at https://www.rmw.lv/page/en/mercedes-benz-280sl-blue-2839

That certainly looks like a product of our salty Canadian winter roads...good luck and we'll be looking forward to the resurrection of this car.

Wow what I list.

My experience is only one restoration but I  finding its best for me to order the parts I’m batches slightly ahead of when I plan on installing them. That way I am able to still return something that is the wrong part or doesn’t fit well for some reason.

"Restoration". This word can be interpreted different ways.
I have "restored" quite a few vintage motorcycles. One thing I hear a lot is, that people frown upon replacing "old" parts with new, NOS ones. The hardcore restorers say that anybody can bolt together a bunch of new parts, but the true value in a restoration lies in "restoring" the original parts. That is a fine line you walk then.
Some parts can not be saved and some parts are more expensive to restore than a replacement. And I have seen some "over-restored" original parts.

I'm loving this story. If I find out who it was in London, Ontario, who let a beautiful Pagoda go rotten like this, I'm going to go pay him a little visit :-)

We are moving forward with body work. The rear fenders looked good bet in reality there are filler more than 1 cm thick in the area of rear lamps. It will be necessary to take it off and looks like the car will need new fenders. We put the car on the stand and checked dimension according factory drawings. Afterwards we putted the car on the fixed stand in the welding grill.

Now we are dismantling parts what were removed from the car previously. Very often people ask how deep the restoration goes and the most common answer is "to the last bolt!". I think it not clear answer. At the renovation process we also think about "how deep" we must go. So some photos of mechanism details.

With the help of hand tools and sand blasting, the body of the Mercedes Benz w113 was cleaned of rust and old paint. After that it was painted with acidic primer paint. Now the car body is undergoing restoration, which we plan to finish by July.

We have completed a major overhaul of the Mercedes Benz 280SL M130 engine. The engine was completely disassembled, all parts were cleaned, necessary old parts were replaced with new ones, galvanized and painted old parts and assembled. We changed the valve guides of the engine and polished the valves. Now the engine is on the stand and we are starting the test. The sixteenth week of the Mercedes Benz 280SL w113 body restoration took place. It was planned to complete the restoration of the bodywork this month and start its preparations for painting, but it will remain for the next month. Pride is for what we have accomplished and must continue until victory.

This week we did well with the Mercedes Benz 280SL w113 body. The car's front left wheel arch and trunk area were restored. Now the other side must be prepared. We plan to start tinning and adjusting the car doorways next week.

This week we will finish the welding of the Mercedes Benz 280SL w113 body and start machining and aligning the external parts. We have to hand over the car for painting by the end of the month. Our goal with Standox Classic support is not to exceed 0.8 mm filler thickness anywhere.

Last week, we moved forward with the restoration of the Mercedes Benz 280SL w113 body. At the moment, we still have to adapt the headlights, which are being replaced from the US to those that fit the European market.
Full details of this restoration are available on our website: https://www.rmw.lv/page/en/mb-280sl-blue-2839-photo-gallery/

We have completed the welding of the Mercedes Benz 280SL w113 body. For the second week we are working on preparing the car body for painting. We smooth out unevenness on surfaces, process welds, adjust gaps and adjust finishing moldings. During the work process, tin and a file are mostly used.

This week we finish painting the body of the Mercedes Benz 280SL w113. We used the Standox Classic painting system and the new Midnight Blue looks great. Only a few places on the door and the hood paint thickness exceeded the specified maximum of 1000μm (1mm).

Finally, the most beautiful stage in the restoration of any car has begun - assembly. All mechanisms and units have been restored, the body has been painted and spare parts have been provided. It's been 70 weeks or a year and 4 months since we started renovating this Mercedes Benz 280SL w113.

Out of curiosity, how many hours do estimate for a restauration like this?
Title: Re: 280SL automatic complete restoration
Post by: mbebrim on October 13, 2021, 04:10:29
Thank you. Average restoration of the w113 take about 1500 hours. This particular restoration project will take little more about 1800 hours.
