Hello All,
This is my first post on this forum. I have a 1970 280 SE Cabriolet. My fuel pump is non operational due to the electric motor not being functional. I have taken it apart and have tried to rebuild it to no avail. I have contacted Mercedes Classic and they say the pump is not available currently and there is no ETA for that part.
What options do I have at this point? Can I use the newer Bosch fuel pumps, as I have in my 280 SE 4.5 (w108)?
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Your first option when searching for information on this site should always be to use the search function. We have a member Bob Youngman who has become an expert at rebuilding the fuel pump.

Bob Youngman is the first stop. There are other vendors like Authentic classics that sell new and rebuilt short pumps if you really want the factory style pump. There are not cheap though.
There are other pumps that will work in place of the factory pump and are not as expensive. They do not look the same but function ok. I know Bud’s Benz has one such pump and I believe there are others.
The newer pumps for the V-8’s will not work. They have the wrong specs. So be careful that the pump you do buy (if not the factory style) has the correct specs. The specs should be found in the tech manual.

The issue with my pump is that the armature has "melted"....
Not sure why this has happened, maybe trying to start the car via a battery charger.
I think I have located a person that is willing to rewind the armature, Advance Electrical Rebuilders out of Michigan.
Mercedessource has also directed me to using the Bud's Benz newer unit. I will need to give them a call to get the details
of their set up.
Thanks for the responses.

Here is what I found when I disassembled the fuel pump :

A good replacement until you fix/find a new pump is the carter one mentioned in the thread below... It's only around $120 and works well

After speaking with Bob today, I will be sending it to him for repair.
What a wealth of information.
Many thanks for pointing me in his direction

Why wouldn't a 4.5 pump work?
btw , I have a new 450sl pump, if interested in having something in the meantime
-
A 4.5 fuel pump is for D jet and it runs at a much higher operating pressure. At least 30 PSI as compared to our cars that run at 10 - 15 PSI.

I have a question related to the short pump. Unfortunately, I have a pump with a damaged impeller (rotor) and I was forced to buy the a new one short Bosch pump.
Do you know whether only the pump core can be purchased on the American market?

I had cores but I sold them to Bob Youngman. You might contact him if you need a part and maybe he'll sell you that part...

Bob has become an expert on these pumps and I believe he is making an improved impeller as a replacement.

Gents
many thanks for this advise. Does anybody know how to contact Bob directly? For instance an E-Mail? Company name or web side?
-
You can PM him - do a member search on his forum name (above) and send him a message that way
-
His forum name for sending PM is BaronYoungman.

Gents!
Many thanks! But I was more thinking, about his professionall address. Knowing me, for instance, I do not have time to look on this side very often- only on weekends.
-
If you "PM" (personal message) him on this site he will most likely get an email.
He is active on the site.
If you have problems, contact me and I'll get the message to him.
