Title: early W111 30 amp voltage regulator adjustment or replacement
Post by: perry113 on October 13, 2019, 12:01:02
I am in search of a new reliable voltage regulator for my 1963 220seb.
My car has a 30amp generator which I believe is identical or very similar to 1963 and earlier W111 fintail and W180 220's.
My regulator has an issue whereby it allows for nearly 16volts which is too much.
I know there is a way to adjust the tabs but I have no info on hand as to the correct process to do so.

I understand that new replacement ones for my car may be actually a Ford made regulator.
I have no new part number crossover to work with.
I hope there is something available that will essentially bolt in without major modification to the car.
Any information anyone can provide on adjustment or a reliable replacement would be tremendously appreciated.

Many Thanks!
Peter

Hi Peter,

The part number I have for the Mercedes replacement regulator is #000 154 44 06 26. I bought that a few years back from the Classic Center for my '60 W128 which should use a similar system to your '63 W111 with a generator. I tried to look that number up and it does not show up on Google. So maybe I entered the part number wrong in my records? I would call the Classic Center and see what they have.

It is not exactly the same as the old, but it fit and works just fine. See attached of old and new. Good luck.

I did a quick check. I took W111014 (not sure it is yours). For W111014 you have PN:
A 001 154 43 06
then
A 002 154 36 06, which is replaced by

A 002 154 74 06, with a note:
As of engine: 982 10/50,20/60 048321 982 12/52 012577 982 22/62 012871 982 10/50,20/60 011063 984 12/52,22/62 003257

The system says this one is available at the dealer within 72 hours, costs ca $450 in my geography. I think it would look similar to what wwheeler is showing (I bought a very similar looking one for 190SL).

I am afraid the system is not recognizing the PN wwheeler is providing...

Looks like Miller's figured out what after market regulator to use.

These were used commonly in the late 50’s and early 60’s. Ford and GM both used them. Also used on tractors. Someone installed one on a 58 180D. See review in link below.

This is great information.
I ended up installing a solid state DVR4 modern 30 amp regulator in the car and it has resolved the issue.
I used a donor  regulator and put the unit inside.

Hi,
this was a very good idea, I would have done the same. The new regulators for Pagodas look the same than the old ones with modern interior and low costs (~20€).

Yes, great job Perry! I still have my old regulator and may want to do the same thing. Do you have a link for the new DVR4 regulator? Can you provide a simple wiring diagram with what wires go where?

Thanks!

Wallace

The gentleman's name is Peter. He provides a wiring diagram and excellent support.
He guided me through the process from afar.

Also many thanks to Drew Ritland who spearheaded this idea in an old Mercedes before I did.

This process works!!

Thanks for the link Peter. I will definitely give the other Peter a shout and retro mine. I am a member of IPOG as well, but never saw that.

Thanks,
