Title: Something wrong in data card
Post by: Classic garage on September 13, 2019, 11:52:16
Dear all,
Before 8 years we've got data card for 230SL from Mercedes Classic center.
According data card motor number has -10-, which is means car with manual gearbox,
but number stamped on the motor has - 12- automatic gearbox.
My car has automatic gearbox, so mistake must be in data card.
As I know this is very common mistake in Porsche, but it is not possible for Mercedes.
What is your opinion ?
Also , in the middle part of metal plate (you can see it as attached file) is written TYP of the motor.
It is become faded during the years and I'm not sure about type,
it must be M 127 II or M 127 III. (M 127 is readable, but rest is not) How can I obtain such information ?

Best Regards
Ivan

A small side note, would recommend you blank out lines 14 and 16, those are the key codes.

Hi Jonny B,

Thanks for reply but,
What do you mean?
My question is about engine number and type not key ?

It's just a warning not to show your key codes, to prevent copies will be made and you car can be stolen.

Engine number on my data card said 130.981. There are mistakes there.

But first I would have to find Bulgaria, Khaskovo, Svilengrad. It's a long way from here.

and as ejboyd5 indicates...

If you take a picture of your datacard say, at home, and post it with the key codes visible:
1. The key codes are there
2. The properties of the picture you took usually contain precise geocoordinates of the place where the picture was taken (unless you wipe out those properties before posting picture)

Not much more a thief needs to zoom on your car and take it.

You learn something everyday.  I have no intention of going to Bulgaria to steal a 230 SL, but if I wanted to, how would I access the location where the photograph was taken.  I'm fairly sure my two Nikon camera don't have any such data capture (the newest one being a D80), but I'm open to learn.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exif#Geolocation

You'll be pleased to learn that our website cleans most Exif data (incl Geolocation) when you upload the photos in order to adjust the size... But only if you use the standard way of Attaching photos.

Back to the original question, it is possible the engine and gearbox were replaced at some point, and swapped from manual to automatic. The riveted plate on the block is commonly found on factory replacement engines.

The datacard shows the VIN number as an automatic and the engine number as a manual. Definitely something odd which cannot be explained with a later change of any of the units.

Ivan,
I agree, the mistake is in the data card. It appears that the "10" engine number is a typing error, it should be a "12".
My reasons are as follows:
Your car was manufactured in March 1965: https://www.sl113.org/wiki/DataCard/USModelYear
It is a USA version car: option code 49/1 thus the date stamp "June 8 1965" makes sense, it take time to transport the car to the USA.
Option code 42/6 shows that it has codes 420 & 422: automatic gearbox and power steering.

Consulting the Engelen book it shows that a 230SLs with a VIN near yours (9865) hat engine numbers below 2000 with automatic gear boxes (-2-) but engine numbers above 8000 with manual gear boxes (-0-).
Therefore, nothing to worry!  :)

Again, the VIN number on the data card shows "12" for LHD and AT.

Huh ?? ??? ???

Hello Ivan,
Alfred is absolutely right.
There is a little typo on your data card.
Your car is from all other data clearly referencing to an automatic transmission car:
VIN-number with the -12-
- engine number(s) on the engine with -12-
- serial number relatedness - as Alfred indicated.

The engine plate on your M127II engine is also completely correct.
All engines had little plate that ex-factory
If it isn't present, it has been removed later during its life.

If you supersize your picture of the engine plate and pressed-in engine number, you can clearly read 127.981 which is a 230 SL engine.

Only the M127 II (or I) is barely readable on that little riveted plate.
Don't worry,
everything correct on your car and datacard.
With the exception of the 10 in the engine-number on the datacard.
Everything else normal & correct.

Best,

Achim

Huh ?? ??? ???

Achim[/size]

What does the "Huh" mean, Achim?
I was trying to point out that the VIN number on the data card describes the car correctly. Which rules out a later change or replacement, and that the '10' in the engine number on the data card is an error. Still confusing?

Oh sorry...,
misunderstood that first.
Was already completely convinced by Alfred's previous answer
and got then confused by yours.
Couldn't figure out what AT ('Austauschmaschine') means here...
... ah, 'automatic transmission'...

Sorry please...
