Hello. I am beginning to reassemble the 230SL engine and will be installing the galley plugs almost immediately. What is the practice for doing so? They look like pipe threads so they should seal but is that OK or should I add silicon or teflon tape?
-
Yes, sealer works fine. Not sure about the tape for oil?

Me either on the tape although teflon should be inert to oil. I'll proceed with the sealer. Thanks Jim. BTW - I'll be starting my reassembly soon so please keep checking for my posts/questions. :)

Harry , , there is a more superior sealer available now or
for the last few years, rather than just going to your parts guy ,and buying
just the first you see, We all know permatex well ,they now sell this ,so
spend a little more and get a real quality product.
Notice it is ultra, advanced formula, heavy duty oil aplications, maximum oil resistance,
regards.

I hate to be a contrarian but neither Teflon tape nor Silicone (Ultra Black included) are ideal for that application. When you are dealing with those sealants you run the risk of pieces of Teflon tape getting loose in the oil passages and with silicone any bits on the inside of the plug will harden in the presence of air again opening up the risk of chunks inside the plug breaking off. I use and recommend Permatex #518 which is an Anerobic Gasket maker that absolutely will not harden unless there is no air so any left inside or outside the threads will stay liquid and will flow through the smallest oil passage even months after you have applied it. I go through a tube about every 2 years or so and usually lose the cap after a year. The remaining sealant will still be liquid in the tube until it is used up.
